Bike Rack

Moto are you able to put the bike on the rack closest to the van?? I have the same rack but the 1st holder seems to close to the van. The handle bar and pedal touch the van. Any tricks to mounting them??

Hi jbell,

I was thinking the same thing. I asked my dealer and they said the handle bars have to rotated 90 degrees to the front wheel. I was going to try it tomorrow. Should be easily done with an allen key (i hope).

What state are you in? I am having massive issues with Jayco HQ about the number plate location. With the rack folded up it obscures the number plate. Then with a bike on the back you can't red the number plate again. AND here in NSW we are not allowed bike rack number plates.

Apparently production of this model was halted for a few days last week because i forced the issue through my dealer. Jayco HQ had to re-think the location of the number plate on this model.

Found out a few days ago that at my first service they are going to move the number plate location and wiring as low as possible under the bike rack. I'm still not convinced this will comply with NSW road rules when the rack is unfolded with bikes attached. I'm pretty annoyed that i paid extra money for a bike rack that i cannot legally use:mmph:

Bile Rack Mounting

In Sydney. Have not posted for a while but I have the exact same van as you picked it up a week after you did from Jayco Sydney. Read your earlier posts re number plate. I will be putting a pole carrier sitting on the bumper bar so no room there for the number plate on mine so hoping I can have it mounted higher to the side. Will need to check with the RTA I think re placement of the number plate. Rgds Jim.

Hey Jim, I have researched this topic thoroughly (even read the NSW road legislation on line).

Don't bother asking the RTA technical inquiries line, they are completely useless, and i think the answers they gave me came straight from the Pauline Hanson book of 'How to answer difficult questions' (with complete stupidity:noidea:).

In a nut shell:
- No bike rack number plate on trailers or caravans
- Top of number plate can't be higher than 1300mm from ground level (already near that limit)
- Number plate has to be clearly visible from 20m at 45 deg from horizontal and side to side (i think Jayco's solution given to me the other day won't comply with this one:der:).

Moving the number plate means fiber glass repairs to patch the holes already drilled for the plate and light. I know i could come up with a solution, but i think its a warranty issue for Jayco to resolve, at their cost. ............ watch this space.

Hey thanks for all that info Moto. Well that 1300 to the top of the number plate has changed my plan. I may now have to look at putting the pole carrier under the rear bar not above it and get Jayco to put the no plate below the bike rack. Visible at 45 deg?? hmmmmmm. In regard to the holes, Jayco will be able to put in a couple of white studs to hide them. But getting back to my earlier point about the bike if you turn the handle bar 90 degrees that still leaves the pedal to hit the back of the van. Moto I thought I saw a photo of your van from the rear with bikes attached on an earlier thread. How did you mount them on the bike rack especially the 1st one closest to the van? Cheers. Jim.

I haven't mounted two bikes yet, but the one closest to the van straps to the one on the outside using the red straps that came with the kit. This will mean its leaning towards the outside one i guess, maybe making room for the pedals.

I plan on giving it a go tomorrow.

Moto see photos of my bikes mounted on bike rack. They have to lean a bit for the pedal to clear the van. Now thinking of just making up a bike rack number plate myself. You can partially see the no plate that Jayco attached anyway. Cheers. Jim.

Edited. Moto also too add, if you can mount the bike with the front wheel on the number plate side the plate is still fairly visible as the bikes rear wheel gearing is on the other side away from the plate and you really only have a few of the spokes in the way. May get away with it??? Jim.

Hey Moto,
I'm guessing you have a 12 pin plug on your car and expanda, do you have power going through pin 2 and 8 for the fridge and battery. I have a 12 pin already with battery voltage at pin 8 but nothing at pin 2, interested to know what set up you and others have.
Cheers Tony

Hi Tony, we went for the smaller fridge, so i have the fridge running off a standard 7 pin, and the battery charging off an anderson plug (optional extra).

Hi Tony
Trailer wiring always seems to be a hot topic, I did a bit of research when we were getting our panda so see if any of this information is of help to you.

If your vehicle is a fairly recent model and has a factory fitted tow bar or your trailer wiring is connected into a loom connector provided by the manufacturer then pin 2 will now most likely be hooked to the reverse light circuit. Pin 2 has always been designated as reverse lights in the ADR but untill the 12pin plugs became available and with reverse lights rarely used on trailers pin 2 became the defacto standard for aux wiring. Over time the power requirements for vans has increased so it became clear that the small connectors on the 7pin plug were not up to the job. Many people now use Anderson plugs for the power connector and of course the 12pin plugs have the 5 heavier pins for this purpose. Have a look at the ADR for trailers here http://www.alltrailerspares.com.au/Assets/Documents/AUSTRALIAN DESIGN RULES.pdf The electrical info starts on page 24 and you will see that pin 8 is to be used for "battery charger" and pin 9 for "auxiliaries" pin 10 is also used for another earth.

So if you were to wire your 12pin to ADR standards you will have
reverse on pin2
+12v on pin 8 to charge your van battery
+12v on pin 9 to power your fridge

To complicate things jayco only half follow the ADR, if you have a read of this thread
http://www.expandasdownunder.com/showthread.php/225-Trailer-Plug?highlight=trailer+plug
you will find a page from the Jayco owners manual that shows Jayco still use pin2 for battery charging and pin9 for the fridge.

So there you are the water seems a bit muddy at the moment, in my case ford have wired my 12pin plug to ADR standards so I have changed the wiring on my expanda to suit (moved the wire that was on 2 over to 8)
at the risk of going on a bit you may also like to have a look at this thread
http://www.expandasdownunder.com/showthread.php/178-Check-your-Anderson-Plug-wiring?highlight=setec

Where in one of his posts expanda brought attention to a shortcoming in the way the setec units handle a battery once it goes bellow 10v. I am currently in contact with setec technical to try and get a workaround that will not void my warranty, the way it works now is of no use if you don't have access to 240v.

Sorry to take the thread off on a tangent Moto and cheers Boots I have some reading to do.
I have 14.4 volts at pin 9 but should put a relay on there I think, pin 2 and 8 vacant.
Anyway will read the info.

Has everyone got the 50mm hitch lift.

Cheers Tony

Hi Satyoga,

Sorry for slow reply's, looks like Boots and Bushy had you covered though, thanks guys.

Yes i have the 50mm block supplied through Jayco Canberra. Without it the van would sit VERY nose up.

I also have a foam mattress which i have removed the silly little folding strip at the end (thanks Bushy:yo:) and have an egg shell foam layer plus a woolen underlay. We find this to be very comfortable, plus it all folds away with out having to remove the fitted sheet, eggshell & underlay now the end strip is gone.

Hope this helps.

Hey Boots!

Mate its zipped in, just look underneath. The cover remains attached, just the foam big gets removed.

Trust me, pack up is SO much easier with it gone, you won't miss it!
