We've just returned from a full lap around Oz, towing our 16 49 1 Expanda with our Territory SZ Diesel. Just the two of us and keeping to the speed limit, except in the NT where I couldn't get up to 140kph, we did 34,000kms in 7 months and average 13.1k/100 (from the car's computer). Very pleased with that and the comfort of the Ford.8-)

over the last two trips we are looking at 21-22L/H in a 2008 5 speed auto V6 Prado towing a 14.44-4 OB Expanda sometimes with both water tanks full and 4 bikes amongst all the other stuff you usually take away.

Edit - forgot to add usually doing the speed limit as well.

I'm a bit of a newbie at this forum and forums generally, but I did prepare some Word based reports for my family while on the trip that I could put up if somebody could explain how.

This forum is a real eye opener for the new caravan owner, congrats to you all.

Just did the trip to Mildura from Melbourne and back. Nissan patrol 3.0 auto, bikes on the roof pulling the 17.56.1 OB. Mostly 110 zones so set cruise at 110 and let it do its thing.

The slightly higher speed pulled up the fuel consumption. On the way up we were battling strong NW winds including a dust storm for 22 litres per 100. On the way back favorable wind for 19 litres per 100.

Interesting to see how a combination of more right foot, heavy load and wind can blow out the fuel consumption figures.

OK figures updated based on recent fill (28/12)

Total Distance: 9604km
Total Fuel: 1093L
L/100km: 11.38

This includes all kinds of driving from towing to highway to commuting. If I look at trips that included towing the van:

Total Distance: 2990.5km
Total Fuel: 393.18L
L/100km: 13.14

That includes some additional running around when the van isn't hooked up. I suspect van only consumption is in the order of 13-15l/100km based on the trips we've done (short 4-5 days, no water in tanks).

Mount Barker, South Australia
Just did our first trip with our 16.49.4, 2 adults 2 kids and loaded van. Went from mount barker to mount gambier and trip computer was reading 18ltrs/100 and got up to just over 20ltrs/100. Was travelling at 100 to 110 with air con on as well. Used 4th and 5 the gear when suitable. We have a 2012 challenger 4x4 manual. We have one size larger tyres on the car which won't be helping things.
Any tips on trying to improve this?

Perth to Coral Bay totalling just under 3000kms round trip.

Holden Colorado 2013 RG diesle duel Cab 4x4 toweing
20.63-01OB full hight van with 3 x 80Ltr water tanks and 3 ton Van

Most of the time we average between 18 to 20Ltr/100
:eek-53:But the worst trip we just had on a tank was 24.2Ltr/100 with the outside temp being 49 Degrees and heading into 35 to 40 knot winds averaging 100kms to 105kms when travelling.

So far realy happy with the Ltr/100 considering were towing a heavy van compaired to the old 16 footer.

Just got back from Melbourne to Gold Coast return.
2007 D4D Prado towing 16.49.1
Car full, kayak on roof, van full, including water tank, Air con on, 2 adults, 2 teenagers. Doing the speed limit.
Averaged 18L/100km.
Head wind makes all the difference on how the Prado cruises on which gear. Cruises control would hunt for gears on head winds so only used on the flats with tail wind. Had head winds on the way up and tail winds on the return.

17.56 outback expanda towed by a 200 series diesel landcruiser from Karratha to Coral Bay and back again sitting on 110kmh with cruise control on averaged about 22l per 100 kms not the best economy but did have heavy cross winds and cruise control doesn't help , selected 5th gear which did help a bit .

Just an observation on fuel economy, I use an app called Road trip where I put in the Odo reading litres price etc every time I fuel up.
Now when comparing what the economy on the trip meter in the PX and what the app tells me the trip meter always reads roughly 1l/100km better than what the k's v litres tells me , at todays fill up The car read 11.5k's/100km and the real tank average was 12.7k's/100kms this happens every time and always better economy on the car

My first trip with the 17.56-2OB was a quickie from Sydney to Port Macquarie for my son's junior state touch football.

2007 Pathfinder Ti Diesel Auto. DPF removed, EGR blocked, EGR injection pipe removed, Rear muffler removed etc. I managed 19.2lt/100km sitting between 95 and 105km/h.

I was quite happy with that considering I get 16.6lt/100km in town and a recent run to Port empty I managed 12.3lt/100km.

My Pathfinder seems to be excessively thirsty compared to many others.
