Our 3.4 petrol Prado does 14/100 with or without the Eagle C/T on the hook. Expect that to go to about 16-17/100 with the 17.56-2?

Most mags and observers say that a pop top increases consumption by 7%, but a full van goes up 27%.

On the flat I'll use 5th (Manual) but any hill or headwind, 4th gear. The 1:1 ratio is better as it is a direct drive and is kinder to the drive train.

Below is a printout from the program I am using (Nomad's Notes) to record cost for my current trip. I have switched off the gas as the heat exchanger has failed again (3rd time) so this is running pure diesel and pulling the van probably 90% of the time.

Currently this trip you have traveled a total of 10440 km. You have purchased a total of 1458 litres of fuel. Total Cost of fuel purchased this trip for Goldilocks is $2,335.21. This is an average cost per litre of $1.60.
Goldilocks is getting an average mileage of 7 km per litre of fuel or 13.97 L per 100 Km. Goldilocks has an average cost per km of $0.22.

Goldilocks is the name given to the Navara due to its colour. :car:

On our 1st trip away last weekend our 2009 Kluger towed the 17.56-1 to Queenscliff and back and returned an ave of 13.5L/100km.
Most of the trip was freeway driving (between 90 - 100km/h) and on the flats I was in 5th (O/drive gear), but on inclines and traffic I dropped back to 4th.

I was happy with those figures but imagine this will climb severely when less freeway driving is involved.

Got to get the series 4. No DPF...

I have heard the new V6 TD has a DPF as well. Simple fix, just get rid of the DPF and get a pipe fitted. If it is out of warranty you wont have any dramas :)

Hey, just wondering what is a DPF. If it makes that much difference, then I might do it for my Pathfinder.

Thanks

I think you will find a 2005 model doenst have the DPF. It is a diesel particulate filter. It is like a catalitic converter for a petrol car. It is fitted to stop the tree hugging greens from whinging.

If you google it it will show you more., but i think it is only the series 3 that has it fitted...

My '08 Territory Ghia turbo petrol runs around 23-24lt/100 with the van on. Mind you, it has been tuned to produce over 300kw and I tend to do the speed limit, even with the van on. Lease runs out June next year. Next car will be diesel, either a Pajero or possibly the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. This will help with my consumption....hehe

We towed our 17.56-1 to Warrnambool on Monday in a pretty decent westerly headwind all the way and the Kluger averaged just under 20L/100km.
The headwind meant it stayed in 4th gear 99.9% of the way (at between 90 - 100km/h) and I can only hope I get the same tailwind all the way home come next Friday...LOL!

i get around 15-16l but will know better when the fuel report comes in. The consumption is up a litre or so due to the BFG AT's i reckon, and the new van is just on 2T loaded. that was doing 100-120kph down the pacific hwy.

worst i got with the old van was 31l/100km towing over the snowridge road through Cabramurra in the Snowies going flatout in 2nd and 3rd as i was running behind.

I'll be very interested in this thread - it may help determine a change of cars.

Got back yesterday from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island return. Approx 2300km towing returned 21L/100km. Best was 17L/100 yesterday with a tail wind, worst was 23l/100. Generally sitting on 80-90kph

We just did a return trip of 600km puling the 17.56-2OB sitting on the speed limit or better and mostly through undulating country and steeper climbs (Liverpool Ranges and Warrumbungles). Avg. (NS Pajero auto/diesel) consumption turned out to be around the 19ltr/100km. With a lighter right foot I might be able to pull that figure back to 17.5 or 18ltr/100km, but it still makes for a very short trip between fuel stops. Pulling the SwanOB we avergaged about 15/100 and on the flats out west pulled this down to 12.5/100.
