I didn't say its not the wrong motor
I'm saying - as you - that the location of the parts leave a lot to be desired

change a starter motor on a Patrol - 2 spanners and 1 hr.......
change a starter motor on a Toyota V8 - 1/2 your tool box and 11 hrs - (top cover, fuel rail, injector lines, ECU etc just to get at it, then replace them all again when you've replaced the Starter)

they are designed for the European market & their fuel - not for Australia and our crappy diesel

I can understand peoples hatred / frustration / desire so slag off any and all types of vehicles

same as a Jeep - 3.5t towing capacity and 10l/100
will it be like a cruiser or a patrol and still be able to do that when they are 20yrs old?
or are they like to Korean ones and be buggered after 10yrs?

time will tell

Col what's designed for the European market! Certainly not cruisers. They are all built for the Middle East. With a consideration for the US and the rest of the world hardly considered.

they deigned the V8 diesel for European market - V8 diesel is NOT sold in USA

and they are not designed for Middle East as well, the Patrol's out sell them 5 to 1 in Saudi and Dubai
the Middle East is a smaller market than Australia for LandCruisers
biggest market (for Diesels) is Poland and Eastern Bloc countries

Go to Doha airport landcruiser and Playdoe's as far as the eye can see. Not a Nissan in sight.

This is Saudi. Petrol so cheap they don't turn them off.

BTW - I have known the ZD30's to go bang at 60,000K as well as some that did 500,000K and then went bang - I have not heard to date of one that went bang after the NADs had been fitted... I am ready to be corrected however.........

as I said @Moto Mech
after the NADs had been fitted, and I am happy to be corrected

I think you will find there were less that went Bang from the Model year 2003........ than from the 1998-2003 model engines.........
again, happy to be proven wrong if I am

but again, this was not meant to be an emotive outpourings of Patrol V's Cruiser V's Landrover V's anything

you like your cruiser - fine, Im glad to look at it and go - yeah, thats my baby............

me personally - I dont like buying parts when something breaks everytime I take my Cruiser off road - and I dont have that problem with my Patrol.
tough luck for me....
or
a Cruiser thats not capable of handling off road where a Patrol goes.......
whatever.........

constructive (subjective) criticism is always good - negative hearsay is a waste of time and energy

your a Mechanic???
what else could you add to help others, not tear them down ...........???????

Lol I never said there wasn't any patrols in that pic! That's Saudi Arabia, FYI it's a different county, Doha is in Qatar. (I knew there was patrols in the photo I posted it because it's a great shot, but there ain't 5 Nissans to each 1 Toyota) I was in Doha last November and never saw anything but Toyotas actually Just about every fourbie at the airport was a Prado. They out numbered everything else 9-1 but that was the airport. Iirc Prado was the number one selling vehicle in the Middle East for 2013, think the Patrol has caught on for 2014 but it ain't 5-1.

I can say 100% that no ZD30's from 98 to 2000 went bang in the Patrols.

It was the RD28 and the TD42 and TB42

there you go, I wasn't sure when they dropped the RD28 and started the ZD30

from talking with mates with the Navara (with the ZD30) the only difference between them and whats fitted to the Patrols is the MAF sensor and its location.........

The Nav Zd and the Patrol ZD are different, Different turbo, no intercooler, different injection system. Very different beast and generally more reliable, but puts out less power as well so not as stressed...

Well, my "BBB" (big black beast) has been dropped in to get the new 12 pin plug put on, wiring getting checked to see if thats whats making our diff lock light come on by itself, and the fuel gauge drop to 3/4 whenever we plug in our old van, and to get the tow bar dropped a bit so that the reverse camera can be mounted in the middle of bumper and be more useful. Got the fingers and toes crossed that it comes out better than when it went in.

I ended up putting my reversing camera above the Number Plate......
when I had it down on the step (under that "ring thing") - I couldn't judge just how much further to go back for the Van....... it was close to the same level (3 inches higher) so it made the distance hard....
now its above the number plate - easy as........

I have been told that the Intercooler on them is weak, especial if you boost the turbo up

if your Brother has the coin - better to replace it with a CrossCountry unit - http://www.crosscountry4x4.com.au/

Im not sure of the price - but it will be over the $1K for sure

either that, or search the wreckers for one off a 4.2.
they look similar, and do fit I have been told

Well, the guys re-earthed the car....just in case, and wired it up with the new 12 pin. they put a new "scan tool" over it and said they got nothing from the control module. Have no idea what it means, other than it wasnt meant to do that. Suggested we get someone to dyno tune it under load. They randg a place for us, but they couldnt do the dyno under load. We will ring the place in redcliffe tomorrow to see if they do it, otherwise does anyone know who in Perth can do it????

I like ours under the numberplate when we had the territory, but our rear wheel on the patrol is bigger than normal, and would obstruct alot. I like it for reversing also. If It doesnt work out then we can always move it again I guess.

Interesting reading...............didn't you do this on the previous page compare model against model starting with the 200?
Just saying ;)

Thanks for your input to @stuartcarr2002 plus I guess another thing you could add to what you mentioned the overall weight of the 2 vehicles you mentioned varies a lot too. So this leads the to the different requirements of these engines.

yes I guess your right there @cruza driver

I was starting to get peeved by the negative attitude (yes I DID say comments were welcome, meaning good and bad points) towards the 3L
- yes they WERE known as a Grenade, because of Nissan's QC (pretty much like Jayco's)

as I said, I dont have a 3L, I have the trusty 4.2L Patrol
I also own a Landcruiser - and would like to think I am subjective to both (they both have good points, they both have bad points)
and my disgust at the 200 series was based on my previous desire to buy one (having had several cruiser's over the years 6 at last count, 7 including the one I have, to update my missus car) , until I read a lot of information about them
- now the Disco's sound pretty nice to me............

however, this thread was for the 3L
and I had seen people asking what to do to make theirs better, that was the reasoning behind the original thread
after spending a lot of money on their vehicle, it does tend to get under your skin when people slag it off for no justifiable reason, but offer no help or advice...............

I can understand people wanting to voice (type) their opinions, however,
light hearted banter is one thing,
one brand is no better or worse than another (Holden / Ford, Patrol / Cruiser, Maybach / Rolls, etc) it is subjective to what people want at the time

as for @stuartcarr2002 comments, thank you Sir,
I did not know what year the 3L started, and was pleased to know that he was to know, again, thank you for that.

I will always acknowledge being corrected if I am wrong - and in this instance, it was wrong for me to start this thread
