@Crusty181 if you up grade your car dose this mean more ball weight you can have or just carry in your car ,,,,,,, I need to increase my payload in the van get plate changed jayco don't do that do they have to go an engineer ????????
More cargo, but no change to the Combined Mass so its a tricky kind of upgrade which will help out if your not too much over. A big upgrade may not actually allow you to use the entire additional weight. Yes and no to the max ball weight. The max 300kg ball weight doesnt change, but because of the proportional reduction of the 300kg when the cars loaded to its GVM, with the GVM increased i suppose i get all of the 300kg ball weight back so long as i dont load the car upto to the new GVM

Jayco adjusted my ATM before delivery and the max ball weight after I purchased it. An Engineer will also re-rate it, not sure by how much though

My upgrade is only 200kg ... the Landcriuser upgrades are much more

Yeah i hear you, but i suppose theres still the underlying personal position that im concerned enough to do it the right way. Its not a massive cost issue for that piece of mind. I havent heard any 1st hand stories either but a mates wife is in charge of a Highway Patrol unit, and shes pretty convincing that it happens.

Yep I agree have gone to a lot of trouble and expense to be as legal as can be on the road.

Wernt called Pootrols for nothing

Yep that will definitely wake @bigcol up!

Very interesting reading gents, @Crusty181 I totally agree about the "I'll just plead ignorance" caravaners. It peeves me right off that I go to the trouble and expense to ensure as a road user I am doing the right thing. It is a personal choice to invest in the right vehicle to tow our pride and joy safely for our family, but also for the safety of other road users.
Then some clown can hook up a 2.5ton ATM van behind a vehicle that has a 2.5ton towing capacity, load it with 800kg of bikes, food, clothes, water, wife and kids and say its okay because the dealer told him it was!!

I have said it a long time ago, several times
your tow vehicle needs to weight more than your van
end of story

if not, your van will "wag its tail" and the car........ very dangerous

I have also suggested weighing EVERYthing that goes into your Van, and put a Dot on it, if you use it, take the dot off, end of 1 trip / 2 trips anything with a dot on - its not going to get used, turf it

that being said,
I agree with @achjimmy getting your vehicle re-plated before licensing is the way to go

not sure if I am in favour of the "after a couple of years" getting it re-plated.......
sounds to my like bending chassis on vehicles that are supposed to take the stress & strain as they are new............

today, on my way home from work, I passes a 100 series towing a van, @ 80kms an hour on the freeway (100km limit)
why so slow?
it was an old old van for sure
triple axle
with, wait for it, a sticker on the back stating its length

35 foot

you could see at 80, it was just about to start to wobble the rear of the Van

both had SA plates on, so I think it would have been a very very slow trip to WA like that.............

anyway, I'm rambling, so Im going back to my bridge to sleep under it................

I don't know too much about the options, I'm in a period of forced learning on the hop, but Im very conscious of pushing it too far. I want to just get it over the line, not so I can load another ton of crap onboard. I presume a pre-reg upgrade is easier because I don't have to organise each aspect, but once its on the road is there any physical difference to the after reg process outside suspension.

My upgrade is a very conservative at 200kg, with a significant proportion of that 200kg overall weight allowance being for the stuff already hanging over the front wheels, not the back. The extra 200kg allows me to put over the back axel what I could have pre-upgrade, without the bulbar and winch being fitted. Im pretty happy the bulbar and winch weight has very little adverse impact on whats happening over the rear axel

Id be pretty uncomfortable with just adding another 200kg to the towball/tub area.

Totally agree, as usual.

I've been banging on about this for ages and can't believe how some see a space, fill it with stuff and ignore balance, total weight, ball weight and common sense.

It's all about checking what you have and working within those limits for your own safety and the safety of others.

It ain't rocket science.

I did tell you about the pizza oven we saw?
And the gas bottles hanging off the rear bumper?

Not having a go at anyone here...we are all sensible...and we obviously check these things carefully.

And we do treat a coffee machine and a weber as a necessity !!

As others have pointed out. We need to be conciouus of the difference between being safe and dangerous. As I have mentioned we are right on payload packed and filled up. Now if I add more weight to the rear locker at the extreme back (couple of slabs of water 20-30kg) it tows better I feel but I am probably over a tad? But I am comfortable in that I know the rig is safe and manageable.

I think a good way to approach it is next time your heading away try and get past a tip or weighbridge and get it checked. Maybe on the way to a van park so if needed you can dump water and be safe on your trip and then revisit it afterwards. It's taken me 3 vans to get the weight close to right and if jayxo hadn't given us the 600kg we be rooted.
