Well the first shakedown trip went pretty well, towing went even better after going up another notch on the chip. Though I'm pretty sure the fuel gauge was in free fall heading down to bowen and was thinking I had done the wrong thing but we were driving head on into a stiff 20 knot south easterly. This morning on the way back we had it with us and the gauge slowed considerably.
The main issue I found was the first night, since we got there a bit late I couldn't be bothered hooking up the mains water and ran off both tanks. While testing the hot water the pump was surging and blowing surges of air, the drifter was saying both tanks were pretty full. I investigated further under the van and the front tank was sucking air into the system, so isolated that tank and all was good. Obviously that tanks was empty, next morning put on the mains and didn't think another thing of it until we got home and Renai wanted to test the washing machine out.
Once again the drifter was saying the rear tank had 3/4 in it so I thought it would be right but I wanted to refill the front so I rolled out the hose to fill it up when I heard the pump sucking air again. Rear tank empty as well, obviously the drifter panel isn't reading well. The front tank now is reading empty so I proceeded to fill that, I have rain water gravity fed to a tap near the van so no great pressure at all. I only got around 10 litres of water in and it was coming back out the fill point.... Wtf!!!
Frustrating to say the least, back under the van I go trying to see the issue. I see both breather hoses full of water, ahhh that would be the problem or so I thought. Front tank filled easily then but once full it filled up the breather hose again. Surely I don't have to pull it off every time I need to fill the tank. Then I tried the rear and probably only got 1/3 in when in started to come back at me again. Breather hose was still clear but noticed the fill hose had lots of airlocks along the way from the fill point to the tank as it snakes it way to it going up and down a few times until it reaches the tank. I ended up dribbling water in there for an hour slowly filling it seemed to do the trick, but come on that a right pain in the ass.
So I'm not sure how they can fix it, I'm certainly no plumber but does the breather hose always fill up? Since the fill point is a fair bit higher than the tanks I can't see why they wouldn't overflow into them once full. Or should the escaping air be enough to push the water out in the first place. And the rear tank needs attention because that is not good enough in my book as we'll as the drifter panel. Looks like they will be beavering away under the van on its first service nutting this one out.
Anyone else have had filling issues ? Any tips in the meantime?
@DaveS any suggestions?
