Mine are very fat and coloured yellow. They were not supplied by Jayco. I bought them myself and they sit in the glove box all the time.
As to what Jayco may or may not sell, I cant tell. Their sales are excellent. But once delivered, yer own yer own.

This had me curious as my van hasn't got colour coded shackles however they are marked with the Hayman Reese brand name. I found this on the QLD transport website http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/Safety/Vehicle standards and modifications/Loads and towing/Safe towing/Safe_towing_guide.pdf Pages 7 and 8 give the explanation of the rating system and it shows that the manufactures name, the shackle diameter and a load rating code are all required to work out the load rating of the shackle and not the colour.
It would seem that mine are not compliant as there is no load rating code.
just had a read of the link and it states...

  1. The Department of Transport and Main Roads recommends that the shackles used should meet Australian Standard AS 2741-2002 “Shackles”, or another equivalent recognised standard, and have a break load limit of the shackle is rated at least 1.5 times greater than the ATM of the trailer.

Note that it states recommends. It doesn't state must or required to be.

    BJ.

Be careful of the word "Recommends". It is only good while everything is going ok. If something goes wrong, then you have to explain why you did not follow the recommendation. Been there before.

Can't help with the legalities @davemc but the shackles supplied with ours are 1.5T WLL. ATM of van is 2433kgs!
and that is the interesting part... if it says 1.5 times your ATM then its around 3.7 for you? If your shackles are 1.5T each.. then 3T total.

You think they have an example easy for stupid people like me :)
I see what I can find around tomorrow. Looked at Bunnings, Masters, Autobarn, supercheap etc online as close did not seem to have any I could see over 2T

One thing that needs checking also is the pin diameter..... Wanted heavier duty shackles but the holes in the previous towbar (Standard Prado piece if poop one) were only big enough to fit these ones!!!!!

Fitted a Hayman Reece bar on the weekend and has larger holes so might look for next size up for ours to be sure!

Try a trailer parts supplier @davemc ... That's what I'll be doing

@dagree I ring around tomorrow was going to head out tonight when kids in bed. The ones we have I think 13's just fit in the Disco so we do not want anything larger. Its a right pain getting one of them in how the hitch is mounted with its release as it is.

Maybe I just get two 3.5 or 4T to be sure to be sure.

Go the 4 tonner's couldn't hurt @davemc

I just had a thought..... If the van jack knifes for some reason due to a crash I would be praying that the van separates from the car hopefully stopping the car from rolling over or worse killing the occupants towing the van. Just hope that the van crashes into the bush and not the other cars around though.

Yes will head out today find a 4T one there is a trailer/toolbox joint down the road. So might come back with more the the shackles :) Was hoping to get out of the house last night been a week since my op and itching to drive myself somewhere.

@skippy when the car rolled 4 times the most important part is the caravan is still connected as the D shackles were rated correctly ::noidea:

Did people see this article floating around about the tow ball going through window?

Fwiw I never expected Jayco to supply shackles with the van, they come delivered from the factory with chains only.

As a query for the brains trust, I can understand the shackle needs to stop the van from coming away from the car in case of emergency, but I can not understand why it would need to be 1.5x , I can't think of a situation where that much weight would be in the shackle ? Unless it was hanging over a cliff ? Does this men the shackles need to be able to lift 1.5x the weight of the van ? Would the welds, chassis, chains be able to support the weight? Bit of an overkill in my opinion. If its truly required for safety then every component would need to have a load weighting.

Just some thoughts.

be interesting to see how you go with 4t shackles, getting the pin through the chain, as the rating goes up so does the pin size, unfortunately bigger than the holes the chain links.

As above total wank, do what you need to do to comply. if you don't believe me, get a 4lb hammer and belt your last link as welded to the drawbar, id be surprised if it makes half a dozen blows before falling off!

that's why Bow shackles are better than D shackles
they have a higher rated SWL / WLL for the similar size

if your van is requiring 4t, you would need 2 x 2.5t Bow Shackles - one for each chain

the ones with the SWL/WLL cast into them when manufactured are legal for Construction & Mining,
but the ones that are stamped on it are not.

dayam @achjimmy
you must have had your "wheeties" this morning.

I am guessing, as a friend of mine is in Manufacturing, that the welds holding the chains on MUST comply with Australian Standard,

if you can video tape you doing that to your chain, and it breaks off, get a good Lawyer, we will be buying Jayco's from you man.... you would be owning that business.

your van stationary weights "X" amount
when travelling, multiply that by the inertia and kinetic energy, and you would be surprised at the weight behind it now.......
having something that is capable of holding X 1.5 the weight of it holding it to your car is not such a drama after all

sorry, I don't subscribe to the "just enough is good enough"
I would rather be "safe than sorry"
