A bloke I work with had his plate changed on the van to 1990 so he could tow with his Cluger. Maybe get it changed to 2490kg ? Just less you can carry.

More out of curiosity than a desire to do so, how does one go about changing the weights on a compliance plate? I expect this would be done through an authorised body in one's home state.

He had it done through the caravan yard he bought it from. I think others have had Jayco restamp theirs as well.

A really interesting thread to read but is making my head hurt. My story so far is....called into a Jayco yard recently whilst away on holidays. Wife looked at a 2007 Jayco Sterling 21 ft van that she really really liked. Spoke with a sales rep who said 'yep, no worries, your Prado can tow it' Which it probably can but after reading this thread, I don't believe it can be done legally. The van compliance plate records a Tare of 2084kg; GTM of 2406kg; and ATM of 2559kg. The Prado has a tow capacity of 2500kg; max ball weight of 250kg. From other reading I've done, the simplest explanation that I found (and could easily understand) was that the ATM needs to be less than the vehicle's tow capacity. So to me, it seems the Prado can not legally tow the van, yet the salesman is saying its okay. I haven't questioned him further on this point yet.

Is my simple assessment valid or are there more factors that I need to consider? The van is currently unregistered. Will it / should it be weighed as part of the regn process? I don't know if rego has just lapsed or whether the van is from out of state.
The cars maximum tow capacity and the vans ATM don't directly affect each other. The car is able to tow 2500kg, its not relevant what the towed unit compliance plate says, so long as its actual weight is under 2500kg. You could tow that van, but only when its under 2500kg. Empty, that van is 416kg under your cars limit. The towed units ATM is relative only to its capacity, not a cars ability to tow it. But its not worth pushing your limits to that extent (in my opinion)

Its difficult enough to keep payload within the allowances without knobbling yourself by buying a van that has such a high tare weight, you can carry nothing in it.

You talking car or van?

Car if engineered before first rego they actually get a additional compliance plate made that states something like "vehicle remanufactured by Lovells" and then the new specs on it. If after its been rego'd I think you. Get an engineers certificate and go spend a year at the motor transport get your rego papers redone. Then carry the engineers report and papers with you in case of being stopped? Guess it's the same on a van?

I had my GVM upgrade done by Pedders Vic. Pedders do a pre-tested off the shelf GVM upgrade for Navara D40. Drive in drive out one stop solution. Pedders do the physical suspension work, replacing springs coils struts shocks. Mine is 450kg constant weight springs and foam cell gas shocks. Pedders provide the Engineer (he lives in a small cage out the back), they then take take the car and docs to the rego auth and its returned to me rego amended with an Aust Std compliant "plate" (sticker) above the original which is unique to my car and good anywhere in Oz

That's different to the one you get pre first rego @Crusty181.

in NSW after rego I don't think you get a plate. But see how yours says Vic? I am pretty sure whilst you are registered in the state of VIC that compliance is good all over AU but if you were to sell or move it interstate it needs to be resubmitted for compliance under another state?

Good question @achjimmy, you'll likely right ... Pedders said its upgrades are compliant with Australian Standards and compliant in each State etc, he was less positive that the upgrade was as a "pre delivery" upgrade would be. But he qualified that in that the Pedders upgrade is identical to whats done by any Pedders store Aust wide. Not that I expect to sell interstate, but he said that the car rego would have to transferred to the new State with roadworthy and appropriate docs etc anyway, and the transfer would just include those upgrade docs and the upgrade would be "transferred" as part of the already necessary transfer process and not a separate process. Seems to make sense ... sort of same but different.

Yeah I often wondered that. Just go to the registry with the figures and the dufus is just going to most likely follow the pattern and your away.

Has anyone noticed the new Navara had a reduced GVM when tow ball weight is added. A max of 300kg TBW reduces the GVM by 410kg. I thought that was interesting but made sense with the TBW being behind rather spread over the tray.

I read somewhere that when towing off road that your weights are reduced.
