Hi everyone,

Not sure if this has been covered but has anyone tried to run a nespresso machine from an inverter?

I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to 12v power and don't really understand it all.

Cheers Andrew

I have a coffee machine which I will use in the new van. It is rated at 1200 watts so I plan to get a 2000w inverter.
Im sure a few others have done it. Do you have one battery only? Solar power?

I too am interested in this thread. But I would think the coffee machine would give the battery a hiding, will be watching to see what people with this setup say.

Also interested however a 2000w inverter is expensive just to get a decent coffee. Have 2 batteries (100ah and 80ah) plus 150w panel.

O.K did some looking round, and have just learned why very few people have done this. The formula to work this out is (10x(battery capacity in amp hours)/(load in power watts))/2= run time in hours. So with my 100 amp hour battery at 12 volt I would only have 30 minuets to run a 1600 watt coffee machine before the battery went flat, so for me it wont work not with out some major adding to my 12volt system capacity to I will stick to the plunger for now. I only have a 90 watt solar panel and am not prepared to spend the money required.

Yeah Gibbo but the Nespresso takes about 3 mins to make the coffee so I don't think time is the issue its more the cost. How bout Nescafe or even better International Roast

The other issue is that inverters aren't all that great handling resistive loads like the heating elements you'd find in the coffee machine. If you did decide to do it, you should test the machine in the inverter before buying it as the are all different.

I run the Nespresso of the 2kva Honda. Looking at a 2000 watt invertor to do same. It's twice a day 3 mins max. Figure I would run the Cruza hooked up whilst making coffee.

I cant help my self. But my Nespresso coffee machine draws 1710 watts at 240 volt, which comes to 7 amps. What we need to remember the inverter needs to setup up 12 volt to 240 volts and as a result that 7 amps to run the coffee machine at 240 volt becomes a massive 63 amps at 12 volt. So you would need some very chunky cables and a lot of solar panels to keep it going, my wife drinks a lot of coffee. I agree with others that a generator is the way to go! a lot easier and probably cheaper to set up rather than running a coffee machine through an inverter on the 12volt system.

There must be something wrong with us. Maybe it's that we've been in the unsophisticated North too long but I just can't get my head around needing a coffee machine. For us it's hot water, sugar for me, powdered or longlife milk if real not available for wife and Timms coffee bags. Stuff all power consumption required as can be done on gas. Anything else will be when available somewhere.

just had a look at the prices of Honda generators as recommended by members on threads on the subject of generators and I think we'll just use the plunger when free camping, coz that's a lot of coffee for around $2K for a generator

Something wrong with us as well @PhilD !!!!!!
Quick boil of the kettle in the morning.... Add granulated coffee, sugar and long life milk to the cup... Add water once boiled and the morning coffee is ready within minutes and the battery life has been saved ;)

i run the latest coffe machine machine from nespresso, have been free camping for a week, without the need for a generator at all. running the entire van off inverter. except air con. single battery - 650 watts of solar on the roof. 1000 watt cont / 2000 watt peak sine wave inverter. never had the battery run under 50% capacity. i was also under a tree, so the panels were not getting full sun. the most they made under the tree was around 10-15 amps. the coffee machine takes around 3 min to make a coffee drawing around 120 amps. but over that 3 mins of time. it did not even make a difference in the battery. we are also very heavy power users as well.
