Something I didn't have to worry about with the Colorado and which I keep forgetting about with the Jeeperific is stone damage to the rear window and while a bit of dirt towing with BIg Mal last year showed not a lot is thrown very high at van I have always been of the mind that it only needs one not to conform......
So while I am fully aware that things like Stone Stompers are around they do require a bucket of money, a stone guard across the front of Big Mal in the normal style isn't possible as it would be inside the Magic 900 but a design in the same line as the gas bottles would be possible but I would need to make one which has wings off the bottles and I may have to go that way BUT I have an idea of using .3mm plastic sheeting across the back window, similar to the light and body Skinz you can get, test sample over back window to see how it lays and try to figure out a way to secure other than gaffa tape................... There are plexi panels you can get but at $300 a bit much but making my own is an option if I can heat mould it okay......... KiSS principle applies........... not having a furry skirt across back of vehicle can end up throwing more than they stop..........

StoneStompers quite often come up 2nd hand, two not so longer ago, one of which I sent to a mate who bought it at a very reasonable price. That sort of stuff will protect the car as well I suppose.

I had acrylic panels on my old GQ Patrol rear door windows, particularly because the after market window industry in those days didnt supply them which meant only genuine if you busted one $$$, which is like being punched in the face and robbed at the same time.

The panels just clipped on with the self adhesive tabs we used to use to attached the external plastic Guido louvres on the back windows of cars with. The tab base stayed stuck to the glass all the time and the bayonet bits stayed in the acrylic covers, and just locked them on when needed. Simple and worked wonderfully for many many years.

You could get thin acrylic from Bunnings lay it on, mark it, cut it and bing bang boom you done. If the tabs are still around you could use extra tabs as the standoffs mid window to follow the curve, or just use high density foam dots stuck the acrylic.

Ask, and yee shall receive. I cant believe they are still around and how easy it was to find them

When I had the odd car they always got a set of them and guess what I have stashed away in a draw somewhere in my shed a set of those clips, tape might need replacing, more ideas to visit great stuff........ Lots of old coots packing up their touring maps around here so might even keep an eye out for stompers, though some are really tight bustards and expect more than they paid for 'em.......

We'll be heading north hopefully in Sept, so you can cast your search south too

The rear window stone protector trial has reached the final stage, the .5mm plastic sheet was cut to size and fitted last week, has been out getting the gammas to it and it has moulded to the glass shape very well, removed and reapplied, squeegeed all he bubbles out and it is hardly noticeable now, used some black trim around the edge of the glass to get the edge of the plastic to shape properly and it seems to be good, holds on at speed, just have to see how things go over time as to any shrinkage or not, don't really want to test it out against flying rocks but its sure to be better than bare glass and with an angle of about 35 deg should be enough deflection.................... $12 at lincraft for enough plastic sheet to make 2 so not an expensive bit of research.................

Hope it works . We did a rear canopy window then got a stone stomper and it’s been great.
Nothing worse than smashing that rear window

Oh what a fun day today was ............... With a couple of prods from The Bride I fitted a Cam monitor in the Jeeperific so she can see the Mack trying to run us over as we drag Big Mal down the road, ( or maybe so I can see her when reversing van and not run her over, again.)
Anyway setting up the monitor I started to wonder where the Garmin Dashcam was getting its power form, it came with the vehicle so since I was digging under the dash I found it, I thought I dig some dodgy mods but this one was a classic, the power for the Garmin comes via a cig socket which he had soldered some wires to in leiu of a cig socket, must have used an iron that does a good job on radiators as it was a bastard job, the cables then wandered into the centre console and I wasn't going to dig any further, so made up a junction and piggy backed off that once I had my cable run to the back, I do love plastic bumpers as just so easy to drill a 13mm hole to fit the socket that I use, test run everything meant connect up to Big Mal, of course a rain squall decides to rumble thru but it all worked, except the damn Garmin wouldn't, strip back the tape and did a nice soldering job on it, all the time hoping I didn't cook the circuit board, victory all round, didn't even break any plastic clips of the panels I removed.......................... So all jobs are done, the new UHF fitted he other day, I like the idea of its all under the seat and just the hand piece on show, Van Cam sorted only thing left is to make a Yak Rak, one that will hold the Yak on its side so it doesn't get collected by the rear door, it can wait, I need a pipe bender.............

Message_1591249290787.jpg............ Both bought at Auto Barn $75 off the UHF and $54 off the Monitor, best excuse for a stop at Dans.

If there was only to be had one lush fluffy imported premium Yak skin seat cover, in my car the Princess would win that debate ... just like all the other debates, with or without violence and pain, thats the only choice I get.

Does the camera work ok

I only used the monitor from the kit as I already had a Cam on the van which is a 90deg cam, acts like a rear view mirror, the one in the kit is the usual 170 deg cam good for reversing but not great at long distance..... my van one is on all the time so I can see the idiots tucked in behind, 90 deg gives you a good view down the road........... should have swapped the van cam for the one I had on the Colorado as it was a CCD camera and had a far better image than the Van one which is a CMOS.

Second trip towing Big Mal for the Jeeperific, the first a 3000km run and this one at 4700km, covered all types of roads and I must say this Jeep is even better than my old WG, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better gearbox than the ZF 8 speeder, it certainly doesn't need to go manual even on the biggest hill or headwind, tranny temp max at 93 and thats on hills, with no van the tranny temp is 89-90, certainly won me...............
Only has standard suspension and again its surprisingly good for towing, the self levelling rear shocks are awesome but new springs are on the mod listing, bit of height and stability all round though my front ones have sagged a bit from bar and bash plates.......
The V6 VM Motori diesel performs well, got rid of the plastic lid over the motor and added a catch can, seems to be happy, this service period of 10,000km it has towed for 8000km, no oil use and going by the onboard computers display it has actually travelled 11560km since last service and the oil quality is at 44% which is damn good, the soot oven (DPF) has been hot enough to burn the crud without having to contaminate the system with a diesel burn, time for a fluid and filter change anyway...........
So this Grand Cherokee is showing up as a great reliable rig like my other 2 Grands but is the best so far......

Don't bother knocking it or telling me how great your tug is, this is my Jeep thread and if your unhappy with your tug sell it...............

I just bought air bags from Michigan Truck spares fitted them myself 8 years ago still going well, cost around $100 AUD landed back then. I recon my 5 speed ZF is the best auto I’ve ever driven can’t wait till I get the 8 speed version which almost happened last week but waiting to see if I have anything left after the house is eventually built ( maybe a 7 speed auto who knows) I must say for a vehicle that gets knocked so much they do perform extremely well, the park here has a few every day so someone other than us must like them also!

I drove my ex bosses Pajero all around NZ’s north island on holidays a few years ago, whilst they are a good reliable vehicle you wouldn’t entertain one after having a Jeep that’s for sure
