Will this setup bring us around Australia or not?

I would lean towards the Ford more than the Triton, have never liked the engine in the Triton and I just don't really trust 'em, they drive nice but.....while the Ranger being a Mazda had always been fairly reliable and has a nice engine and good gearbox BUT since they are both old rigs, you just have to go with gut feeling and a good inspection, how they have been looked after is a good yard stick, the little things count, doors open and close well, seals are in good nick...................I think for towing you will find the triton engine wanting in the long run as it's 4 speed auto may be wanting for towing.

Confirmation that timing belt replacement has been done for any vehicles that have a timing belt is very important, don't take someones word for it, those with timing chains are usually good.

Here's a site that has recalls and reviews on vehicle models which will give a good indication on what has possibly been done to the vehicle over it's life....You just fill in the boxes for the vehicle.

Most important is the airbag safety recall........... https://ismyairbagsafe.com.au/

And that is the problem. The FORD looks like a personal-project of a surfer-dude where he tried out some things. Good ideas but not really very well executed.
I can not say anything about the mechanical situation of the car, that is not my strong side. I am not a engineer, I am a creative person ;-)
Anyway, the FORD more felt like a monster-truck because auf his 4-inch-lift rather than a car I want to spend my next 35.000 km in.

Sounds like a good observation Jack, don't need to be an engineer just have good observation skills and a good dose of Common Sense ( common dog), things no school or Uni can implant.

Thanks @Drover for pointing out the lack of gears in Tritons automatic gearbox.

I might get a solid workmen canopy (180x180 cm), therefore I have 4 cars in my mind that would make my dream come true.
(let me guess, you are favoring the FORD/MAZDA ;-)

The Mazda and Nissan are manual you don't want that, auto leaves them for dead when towing, 1st gear is usually too high so most slip the clutch, not good, auto's used properly just perform better, though many folks have no idea how to use one...........until these new boxes I never liked them in trucks or cars but do now......
The 2013 Ford looks good, I was originally going to have boxes like that with the middle section caged for fuel, genny etc but found the shed was cheaper in the long run.....2011 Ford standard suspension both seem good for age................

Sorry for my brief reply on the triton but 0that model had bad reputation. The one you were looking at seems to have the motor replaced due to their overheating issue but you don't know what other damage was done to the bolt on bits to the engine. It also looks to me it has been mine spec so probably been commercial use at some stage,

I know you are on a budget but a few $k more would give a a low km clean car in the Ford. Don't feel daunted by the size you will get used to it pretty quick. The Nissan that age had fuel pump failures just outside warranty so you would need to find out if that has been replaced. They also have the little motors.

Anyhow have a look at these to add to your list

Guys, you are fantastic!
When it's all done I will definitely donate some money to the forum as it saved my a** quite often ;-)
Our budget is limited to 20K so we can't top that one up as we still need to buy ANYTHING that goes in a caravan and car.
Don't have an entire household and content of a garage to choose from.
We flew in from Austria with just a couple of suitcases ;-)

I wasn't aware of the disadvantage of having a manual when towing. Sounds reasonable and to be honest … I prefer the more comfortable way and was always favoring the automatic ;-)

Later Automatics, I beleive lockup in the higher gears so slip is not a problem once you get going. You then have an advantage of auto when you get going that the slip makes it easier to drive. Although with the Navara (if it is the same as the Pathfinder) 1st gear is actually low enough. With no load I ussually use 2nd with no issues on the flat.
It really comes down to personnel choice, as autos have come a long way in control and driving style will dictate how things go.

I quite like this BT-50, BUT have a look on its condition report!! Who looked after that car??

Will it pass mechanical check / registration with a crack in its windscreen?
All the other dents and scratches don't bother me too much … a trip around Oz isn't exactly 'wellness' for a car, but hey, missing keys, broken buttons do bother me!

Maybe another option is the Pickles and Mainhelm damaged vehicles auctions, and look for a hail damaged vehicle which will be classified as a repairable write off vehicle. There was recently a hail storm in Sydney and some of the damage cars will be written off and making it to auctioned now.
We bought our daughter her first car (RAV4) by this method, registered the car and she drove it for 3 years before selling for the same purchased price, and the damage was never fixed.
