I have also found that some "out of the way" places the local re-transmitter is directional so if you have the town between you and the transmitter you get a signal but if you are behind the transmitter you are in the shadow and no matter what aerial you have, reception will be hit and miss, the TV is usually the last thing that is wrong, location, aerial and cable cnx most times.
