Hi
We have a 2017 Expanda outback 16
49.4 we've had since new
Recently noticed some cracks on the pop top roof skirt....if that's what its called.
Basically where the springs in that lining are located.
Has anyone replaced and is it a big job DiY
Any feedback appreciated

Have a close inspection of the cracks to see if they a just surface or wear marks, if its starting to flake off then it will only get worse, some vinyl repair glue, tube stuff can hold it off, if it looks like age is showing and you think it needs replacing then I would pop the roof up, then tie the struts end together, ie" top end to bottom end on both sides to make sure the roof doesn't pop up higher, next up unscrew and remove the skirt carefully, with vents closed then take it to a Motor Trimmer/ Canvas repair shop to get a new one made.. You can then spec a better vinyl and certainly better flyscreen ....

You should be able to close the roof if you did the strut tie offs properly though when lifting it again keep a good hold in case your tie offs let go and in both cases be wary of the load from the awning it may cause roof to skew to one side ....

Not really just fiddly, some times the silicon patch will last years, well I found it did on awnings ................. I can't remember if they are in one full piece or not, if so then you would have to cut it in half to get it off as struts and internal braces would be in the way, get new one made with a velcro joiner ....bluddy hell of a lot of screws I do know......

Check with Jayco, they may be able to supply a new skirt complete? The problem I would see in having one made is the stiffeners that are built in to the skirt all around, mine has two in each end and three down the sides.

I would think that the lifting mechanisms at each end are at their full travel when the roof is lifted so removing the skirt shouldn't be a major issue, you could unscrew the retaining strips top and bottom and maybe cut it to remove it...but...the skirt is all one piece, at least on my 17.55-8 it is...so I don't see a new skirt being able to slip in to place with out separating the roof totally being the skirt it is narrower and shorter than the actual roof. The electrical connections to the roof air and the solar come down a vinyl tube above the fridge, so to replace the vinyl skirt in my case I'd have to disconnect the electrical connections as well to allow the new skirt to slip in to place....then replace the screws plates etc. It would be a big job for one person, you'd need at least two bods I'd reckon.

The skirt on mine will eventually need replacing as it has a couple of pin holes in the corners...looks fine and doesn't let rain in so not in any hurry. I won't be attempting it myself though, I will have to spring the money to get it done professionally and get a warranty...

If you went a Jayco job, if you can get one, seeing as its one piece then the roof would need to be chocked to hold it up while you removed the internal strut affair, the stiffeners aren't a biggy for a trimmer, just a pocket, easy to add plus with a Trimmer you would get it with a velcro joiner or even a zip, so you can fit it easier, then you have dodged the difficult bit, removing and replacing would be a doddle , the electrical isn't a biggy either, just get a velcro flap made on the new one which holds the cable runner in place and no need to disconnect any of it ... So really one man job as youv'e worked around the heavy stuff and made a better bit of gear at same time ...................
Far better to take Van to trimmer so he can measure things up, see the how and why of the mods you want and then he knows exactly what your talking about, met too many people who just describe or draw pictures, do the tape work themselves and its stuffed up, far better for them to see it in the flesh then when you remove it take it to him for cross refence .. I would think removal would be a couple of hours if that, few hundred screw and carefull trim with a knife, fitting not much longer as you have only removed the vinyl the rest is still in place.... a stage so you can get around the outside would be needed.... When they do the measureing its their problem plus less chance of van getting damaged..

To hold the roof up, just remembered cut 4 pieces of pvc pipe for each corner of the roof, just like storm posts, they will make sure the roof doesn't drop......

Well thats my 5 bobs worth......
