Pet annoyance for me is probably car manufactures.
Should be a clear standards
TARE.
Some are full fluids.
Some 10 lt fuel
Some driver and fuel.
You need to search for fine print

Tow capacity.
Some are GCM-GVM gives you tow capacity. Like Isuzu, Land Rover
Some are we keep eating into payload so we can beat others.. Pajero Sport, Trailblazer, Everest..

Said it a few times do not advertise X tonne towing if you really cannot not do it unless a skinny guy and van loaded with everything in the rear to get ball weight down.

Still cannot work out how a Pajero Sport GLS tows 3.1 tonne.. I sent a email to Mitsubishi they said talk to dealer

Pajero Sport GLS Tare 2100 GVM 2710 GCM 5400. GCM-GVM 2690.. Although they do the eat into payload trick.
So you use maths 5400-3100 leaves 2300- tare 2100 leaves 200 kg payload for Driver, Hitch and Tow ball weight on a 3.1 tonne van.
Although anyone who buys one will go 3.1 tonne towing I get a large off road van.

I be close with the Disco ARB steel bullbar not helped or my fat gut :)
TARE 2490 GVM 3240 GCM 6740
Tare inc all fuel and 75kg driver. cough cough a lot smaller then me.
GVM I get close to 3240kg. Payload 750kg
Ball 270kg Bar/hitch 70kg Leaves 400 for me, Wife and 4 kids and their crap.
Ball can be higher if full water and I carry annex.
GCM
Van is 2780kg ATM. Again I know I got close to over with 3 tanks of water..
Yes thanks Jayco put three 80 lt tanks, Toilet and HWS Water and 2 gas bottles and leave payload at 475kg..
So with 3500kg real tow capacity I have to really load the van to go over GCM.

Jeep have a well detailed load listing for bums and bags equal to tow ball just don't mention GCM, give a GVM and max axle loads but no sign of a GCM on plate, book, workshop manual or even on the RVDS ......... some digging around gives me an unconfirmed figure of 6095kg but I bet you the salemen tell Joe blogs, GVM plus Tow Cap gives you the GCM, a scary 6495kg, yeah right..............

We nearly have the same payload @davemc with my GX 200
You are a lot thinner then me mate he he he :)

We might be looking again after lease ends next May. Would of brought the MUX last time apart from no GVM upgrade available and kids seats did not fit well.
Looked at the MUX recently the payload on it gone down 55kg since we looked last time.. 640kg Although they use 10l fuel as Tare. so full tank under 600kg.
Tow 3 tonne leaves you under 300kg for family/junk after TBM and hitch. Mum and Dad and 4-5 kids must be all small :)
At least there is a GVM upgrade now increases GVM to 3200. So extra 450kgs payload. Payload now 1090kg.
Although fully loaded your Tow weight down to 2550kg as you cannot increase GCM. Unless its a Toyota it seems :)

One of the reasons we got the base model Everest was the 757kg payload. Also only 5 seats and 80l fuel tank. Did look at the Isuzu mux but salesman said do not use a wdh as you could void your warranty.

Yes less bells and whistle more payload.

Standard Isuzu Hitch you cannot use WDH.. they also have a short hitch which does not help.
You can add Haymen Reese
65lt tank in MUX low too.

New Mazda/Isuzu Mux coming next year so probably be ready when we get out of lease.
We could just end up keeping the Disco.. Only 60k on it although last 3 services they found small oil leaks :(.
Pretty sure he said they done all the seals now after 3 services. Driveshaft, Cross bolts, diff etc. We never seen any oil on garage so must of been small leaks.

60K on it, barely run in, the old oil leak repair bit like the worn wiper blades or the changed spark plugs on the diesel service invoice.....workshop version of nigerian scam usualy.

Last Disco started costing $$ as it aged.

The best that one could hope for would be random checks and everyone drives through this gauntlet, just like RBT checks. I agree that any law is a bad law if it is NOT enforced. Just a waste of legislation and jobs for the paper pushers otherwise.

On Brisbane channel 7 on Saturday evening at approx 6.30pm EST, our member @wally from "Weight Check" starred on the screen directing vans and tugs onto the weighing devices at the RNA showgrounds where a caravan show was on. Apparently, Saturday was a day when vanners could get their vans and tugs checked to see if their setup met compliance plates/rules. The station did say that MOST did not comply in all aspects and warned that those not meeting the limits could be fined hundreds of dollars if caught. Fortunately, there was an amnesty for the day, so hopefully most took the warning seriously. Strangely enough, several vans had faults with the gas fittings to fridges - even a new van!. Perhaps @wally could give us some indication of how many/what percentage of those checked failed and what were the major reasons? I am sure all members would be very interested. What about it @wally??

These weigh-in love-ins are relatively regular occurrences accross Oz. Agree @Crusty181, but at least SOME?? might get the idea. One of the comments made by a vanner whose rig failed the weight/load test commented that the way ATM, CVM, Tare and Payload are calculated, plus understanding the terms themselves was too confusing. A good point. All the more reason for vanners as part of their licence (van registration?), should attend (and pass) a half day course on this subject as suggested by @Drover in an earlier post.

In contrast, people with an active weight/legal/safe interest never seem to suffer from the stupidity/confusion. Most people who dont get it, dont give a crap and simply have no interest in understanding it. They dont need a course, they just need to want to know in the first place. A few hundred strategically issued hefty fines filtering onto Social Media will do more for self awareness than a course will. Bit harsh, i know.

As I have said before after 6 weeks around Qld ,ignorance,arrogance ,stupidity abound when overloaded rigs are discussed.Boots is 100% right a few good fines would get around the social media in a flash.I blame to some extent the van and vehicle manufacturers also, all trying to out do each other re weight carrying capacities ,accessories etc.

With the blind social media sheeple dissing on the bastard overloaders, the untapped mountains of tax/fine revenue and not a hint of community backlash im astounded the bureaucrats are missing the only ever community supported cash cow .... (It will have nothing to safety but suspect it wont go un-noticed forever)

I suppose the Modern, touchy, feely way would be for each and everyone who tows a van to do a quick course for say $250 with renewals every 3 years and sign up to a Self Regulated Aggreement to comply with the regulations for each state, of course you get a sticker to put on your van to show that you are complying. Much like the vehicle builders compliance to ADR's self regulation where they fit plates stating that the unit complies..............thusly saving governments doubling their vehicle and road compliance departments.

Up here in QLD though Anna the Plank might grab hold of the idea, she see's increasing the size of the public service as a brilliant way of keeping QLD unemployement figures down ignoring the cost to the rest of us and bigger and more fines is always attractive to NSW and ACT, with WA just saying Get Stuffed to any ideas from the East...lol,lol.

Interesting going through facebook.. big advert TrailBlazer someone asked real weights and someone at Holden replied
167kg left for a family of 7.. as that is what they aiming for.
Hopefully a skinnnnny family carseats weight around 7-8kgs alone :)
