Hi all,

I've had a bit of search through and couldn't find anything on the subject of number 2's when free camping. I know the consensus seems to be no number 2's in the van but what does eveyone do when there is no other toilet? I have my first free camp coming up at Easter which i'm really excited about but I have been wondering about this. I am the only male in the family (except my mate Max the dog) and I don't think my girls would be keen to go bush with a dunny roll and shovel, I'm not against using the van toilet....after all we did pay for it, but then there's the issue of dumping chemical.
Thank's in advance!

Cheers.

Burnsy,

If stayin in the one spot, dig 1 deep hole (poo pit) 2-3 feet deep. Every time someone goes, just put a shovel full to cover. When moving on, fill it all in.
Another option we have done with the kids is to buy biodegradable bags to go in. Once they go, I then go and dig the hole and bury.

Is there an environment friendly chemical you could use in the van?

Hi burnsy,
When we free camped through Central Aus we always seemed to find a loo early in the day, told the boys whether they needed to or not hold ya breath and push like there's no tomorrow... :)
When we head out to the corner in September I suspect this plan may not work or if staying in the same place for awhile, in that case we will use the panda loo :( much to my disgust.... No way in the world would my boss agree to using a hole.
We haven't been free camping in the one place long enough but if there isn't a dump point nearby then there's not much option other than burying the waste I guess. Our paper and chemical is biodegradable, maybe that doesn't mean environmentally friendly though :noidea:

Is nappysan biodegradable? If so, use that in your toilet cassett. We use it in our panda toilet when free camping. Breaks everything down really well and is heaps cheaper than the proper toilet chemicals. Must admit though, we have only used dump points to dispose the waste, but if it is biodegradable, use it and bury it.

We use Thetford Green in the "Cauldron" - it is suitable to also dump into our septic tank (does not kill the good bacteria) when we get home and have used the loo for 1's & 2's while away or on the road home.

Like any good citizen, you should not "go", "bury" or "dump" within 100m of a water course - just to be sure!

I normally use napisan but don't normally drop 2's in it, I have emptied the cassette before with 2's in it and found the napisan not very effective for odour but I guess you also need to think of the environment.

We dont hold back with our dunny. No2's are ok, especially if there is no other convenient option. I dont mind emptying it. I have been known to drive to a town with a dump point.
Are you camping remotely?

Woolworths napisan, has a higher level of chemical than napisan, put a couple of drop euco oil for a nice smell, just don't any of it on the rubber rings, apparently it corrodes if we are free camping and have the option we dig a big hole and put a camp toilet seat over the hole, the put an ensuite tent over for privacy, put a shovel of dirty every time you go, cover it in when your finished, but most of the time we use the inside loo, no arguments on digging the hole, I empty the van loo and it doesn't really worry me, cant see or smell anything when you empty if you do it right.

I've never free camped more than 3 days thus far and the dunny has always been fine (using Nappy San) and #1 and 2 and usually just find a dump point somewhere on the way, might have to re-think about this for the Corner trip though.

And trust me there is one thing worse than number 2's in your tank.

We use baby wipes and put them in a little bin which we keep in the combo area.

I find you need to empty the toilet before you go mobile otherwise the whole inside of the van gets smelly.

We often go Free Camping - eg 2 weeks at Cosy Corner (WA) or Ellendale Pool. There is a Long Drop only there, as well as a dump point (at Cosy), but we use our own toilet. No issues with emptying the cassette there. Last few times, I have used a generic Napisan mix plus a little Eucalypse. There have been a few formuleas for the tank and cassette on this forum.

Nappy San is no good if you are emptying into a septic, it can kill the bacteria in the septic system, like bleach does, then the whole septic will stink like....well no 2s.

@crackacoldie sorry to ask, but what's the difference with the napisan going down the sink drain to the septic, or me emptying my loo with napisan directly in the septic tank, I know we can't use bleach, did that once and I did kill the bacteria, the septic man wasn't happy, but they came after a while, but never had an issue with napisan
