So as said we went looked at what we get around with 4 kids and 3 in car seats not easy.
We will either have to wait to middle kid out of car seat 2 years unless he grows, maybe I need to water him daily :(
Or I upgrade the Mini to something with k's on it which could be a dog.

Otherwise it will be a pain with 2 cars seats in the back you cannot fold down the single as they all 60/40 folding. If you put three car seats in the 2nd row only the Mux or Colorado will fit if we move Connor from full booster to cheap travel fold up one with have. Which then rules out taking a adult with you. Which leaves the Everest can put two car seats in the 3rd row as has anchor points although loose boot space :(
Or two in second row and one in boot although not much room for whoever sits in 2nd row with two car seats. Not sure a adult bum would fit.
Looked at a Patrol fits three seats in the middle although only 2 anchor points :( and 50/50 split in 2nd row :(
We can get a engineered anchor in these probably $400 a seat.
Sarah would like the titanium Everest umm why do girls need leather seats etc .. :behindsofa:
I think if the Disco can limp 2 years we get a 2015 s/h. 2 years old taken a hit in $'s
If you use a Territory as a example around $58k new 2013 around $40k with 50ks on it..

Then $ wise is it worth it as chatting with @Smergen a $35k upgrade for $4k of fuel a year does not make sense :) The fact we downgrading on all vs the Disco does not help. Probably have to add a suspension upgrade to them as well so more $'s and setup for towing camera/12 pin/redarc etc.

Its the fact I worry we killing the poor Disco. if the engine goes its body of chassis so 3 days labour.
We serviced the auto and added a sump so they can change the oil so hopefully thats ok.
Servicing costs us around $1600 a year the Colorado7 is free for 5 years the rest new are cap priced around $500 a year.

In 5 years it still allows $10k of repairs on the Disco and thats not talking depreciation.

Still cannot get my head around leasing. For those who leased does the below seem correct.

So 36 months on a Colorado7 $1658 a month $59,688 in total
$46,335 car
$13,000 fuel
$3000 insurance
$2500 rego
Servicing free. Say $3k
$67,000
Then be around $21k buy out at 46% after 36 months
Then $15k tax savings
so basically breaks even .

D4 $2291 a month $82k
$72k car..
$13,000 fuel
$3000 insurance
$2500 rego
$3000 service
$93,000
Buy out $33k..
Tax $19k. So again close

As suggested:

If you're not intending to travel too far in the next couple of years then maybe consider taking two cars....or sending some of your passengers by train!

Seriously though. It would be less of a drain on the budget to drive both cars to close destination if relatively close and defer much longer trips till you've sorted out the seating issues with the car seats or the kids grow beyond the car seat issue.

It all costs unfortunately.

Re vehicles it is possible to get a 2yr old diesel cruiser or patrol for longer hauls but it would have to double as a runaround I assume and yes the running costs are higher.

The two car travel would also help you sort out the weight issue that seems to worry you with the new van.

Whatever you do with replacement vehicles I'd certainly use a broker or RACV to weed out the dogs before you even consider them. There's no real guarantee but it might make the process less painful.

Good luck...you'll sort it!

thanks @Dobbie Two cars be a pain unless under 2 hours away.. Unless we can setup one to tow and one to push like a train :) get two Mini's :) he he that look funny :)

You can still lease a s/h car if it ends up under 200k on the clock at end of the lease. So something around 100k on it would still work if I think under 3 years old. 2012 GXL Cruiser be just mid 60's or mid 50's for a D4.. Although not much of a saving with a car around 100k on the clock.
Leaseplan says $71k for either as a lease.

Mid 20's your not getting anything newish that tows over 3 tonne

I agree with @Dobbie and take two cars.

My brother has 5 daughters and used to drive a Patrol to cart them around. About 12 months ago he ditched the Patrol for a Hyundai I-max, he loves it, so much room for everyone now.

Should add Sarah loves her Disco.. She like a D4
If I thought it was more reliable I put the long range tank in and be done with it.. we have had it since jan 2010. Something pops every 6 months or so.

In the last 18 months we done queensland twice, Tocumwal twice, Merimbulla, Halls Gap and Mount Gambier all over 2 hours away.
Smaller trips Bendigo, Ballarat, Somers, Bellarine, Nagambie around 2 hours.
Not sure we want to take two cars each time, we try to go away monthly would be a pain..
Added fuel costs as well :(

Next year we hopefully doing Flinders (2016 group meet) then up to Alice.
thinking Warrnambool, Tocomwal again all over 2 hours.
Then smaller weekend trips.

Yes did think Captiva7 or something and sell both cars get around $25k for both which pay for Captiva.
Although still $30k plus for something for me to move into.

I still think you need a train!

Better than two minis.

Whatever, I hope it's a stress free decision. Take your time, and don't lose all your calculations and bits of notes (I've done that and had to go back so I could remember what I thought I was considering).

If you use two cars you could call yourselves " the D Doubles".

Something tells me @davemc you're going to have to compromise. You are chasing a bit of a unicorn... A cheap reliable runner that can tow the Taj Mahal, but is also very comfortable for day to day school runs and domestic duties. For me this is how I would weigh it up if I was you:
  1. You love the D3 but just not the fuel and service costs. It tows very well from all accounts, and meets your family seating arrangments at the moment. Just keep as you are, acknowledge your running costs are high but are cheaper than what any changeover cost would be. That way you keep your mini and D3 and life goes on being manageable.
  2. You get rid of the D3 and the mini. I would buy a strong reliable runner (and yes, I'm still serious about the dual cab transit I posted a link to) that can haul the van and family. If that's a older 100s so be it. Sure it doesn't have many mod cons of the D3, but then is that half the reason it's still running around and the D3 gives you cold sweats? Then as a second car grab a second hand comfy people mover (Carnival, Territory, etc.) Then when one car is out of action, you still have a 6 seater to get around in.
At the end of the day mate, if you get a C7 or MUX or something similar, once the kids get a little bigger, you're not going to have enough carrying weight capacity and you'll be looking at a Patrol/LC combo regardless assuming you aren't going down the D4 route. Otherwise, if you are ruling out a nice 6 seat Silverado/F250/dual cab transit/Iveco, then you're going to need to down size the van.

Just my 10c.

Give him 15 cents!

Totally agree....and I'd ignored the fact that four little boys will grow to four large boys so the weight issue will rear its ugly head again.

You're doing lots of research and weighing pros and cons so have fun with it.

Yes I am chasing the unicorn. The Disco suits us better.
It is just I am starting to worry 10 years old a petrol and towing how long the life span is.

If you compare the Disco to other cars.
Not even sure we can flip a seat in the 200 with two seats in it. Also adults can sit in the 3rd row and have legs.
Air suspension is great
tows well
Handles well
Everest gives you a few nice things if you go higher spec model.

Was hoping the Fortuner or Everest would work for us easily.
Fuel $4k a year takes a while to catch up to a $35k upgrade :)

For now I keep a eye out for something to upgrade the Mini around $25k that can tow and I think we keep the Disco

Just keep the flaming disco Dave. Anything you buy secondhand (even 100series) is likley to give you a few service "surprises" . It hasn't let you down yet has it?

Went into Limp mode last weekend as air suspension fault again. Seems $150 sensor they waiting on.
Had some other problem with a sensor when we went to queensland which stalled a few times on idle.

Although no we have never been towed or stuck on the side of the highway..
