I've never understood this fascination with towing and fuel economy.
People spend over $100K on their car and van and then want to save a few cents by travelling below the posted limit to save maybe 2lt/100k's and thus creating a mobile roadblock for other road users.

If your vehicle is capable of towing comfortably at the posted speed limit, then why not do it.
If your vehicle is not comfortable at the posted limit, then you have the wrong vehicle for the job.

My 2c worth.

Hate vans that sit on 80 in the 100 zones and worst of all is when the selfish buggers don't even pull off to the side when there is a chance for it. Makes people insane and they take risks passing when they shouldn't. If you're that worried about the fuel consumption then don't tow a van.
If you must for whatever lame reason go that slow then at least think about others on the road.

I for one as well as the miss's are the ones usually passing cars going slow. Absolutely love the look on some peoples faces when they are overtaken by a Prado towing a 17.56.2 OB, it's like WTF !!!!!! :)

Just wanted to revive this thread to get some advice and opinions.
Especially from those who own one, @Flanders , @straydingo and @Kate File

I'm looking at trading in the Jeep on an MY12 Disco 4 SDV6 HSE and just wanted to know how they're going at the moment.
Anything I should look out for etc.,

G'day Matty, still have the MY12 and still going great. I have not had any problems with the vehicle. The only thing to keep in mind is the service cost if you are getting it done by Land Rover dealers, can be pretty expensive.

Are the service intervals still 20,000km? If so it puts the higher cost in perspective. The disco 2 I had cost around $400 at 20k intervals on average whem mr toyota was still charging $300 every 10k.

Although we have a D3 Petrol we stopped going to Land Rover there are a few specialist places half the price. Just a thought although not sure I do it with a new new one :)
New Disco will be out next year so there could be some deals..

Hi @Matty4 I have a MY13 SDV6SE and services are every 25,000KM, my first 25,000 service was $450 at City Land Rover which I thought was very reasonable. The 50,000KM service is due soon (43,000k's) and that service is $850, a mate of mine has a MY12 and he said that if the brake pads need replacing they always generally say to replace the rotors. Then you're up for $1500 just for the rotors and pads, so he bought them online direct from the UK and had a local mechanic fit them, cost him all up $720. The 75000KM service is back to $450
I love the Disco and I will only be changing it when we see the new model come here in 2017!

How are the resale values on them out of interest? I'm told they are generally ok.
Like anything at that end of the price range there is always a fair bit of depreciation in the first 3 years. I bought mine as a demo with 1800k's on it, but $12K of its ticket price, it came with a 5 year 200,000k factory warranty. At the time I asked the dealer what the resale would be like after 3 years (when I was due to change over). He jumped on carsales.com.au infront of me and of the same model there wasnt one under $70K that was 3 years old. That was miles above where I needed it to be for my residual after the same period.

Looking at the SDV6 and the TDV6 what sort of pricing can I expect from Perth dealers on the new models? There is only 2 dealers here and I think they are owned by the same person so might be difficult to get any discounts. Just out of curiosity what is the TDV6 like for towing a 16.49-3 in comparison to the Prado 3l diesel?

Thanks
Doug

Not sure on the pricing in Perth Doug, in Vic the SD is about $5K more brand new and the TDV6 would pull the skin off the Prado. We have two dealers here in Melbourne that are owned by the same person and they are more competitive against each than the dealers that aren't owned by them. Have you looked at demo models? They have deals going on them over here at the moment, I saved $12K off my Disco's price tag because it had 1,800ks on the clock and I got a 5 year/200,000K warranty with it.

Hi mate,

I got a better deal at Southern Landrover even though they are both Barbagello. The Principles (managers) are different. Albany is worth getting a quote from. They are independent of the 2. You'll pay $80K for the TDV6 on a main event deal and then negotiate some extras on top of that.

@Matty4 @straydingo doesnt seem to be on here anymore? But he offloaded his beloved D4 a few months ago and now rides a 200 series. I think he was disappointed in the issues he had when he did his trip up the centre but best to ask him direct.

Hmmm.....interesting.
I've kinda gone off the idea at the moment. Looking at it logically they don't offer anything over and above what I've already got in the Jeep (except the 7 seats)
Even some things standard in the Jeep are optional in the LR, which was disappointing to see, as I couldn't find one second hand one with those options fitted.

Yeah and when I was looking @straydingo had wised me up. to get some options you had to have other options that you didn't neccesarily want! Just drove the dollars up. With toyota you don't get the options in the first place :p

The clincher for me was I arranged a demo, it was a filthy hot day so asked for the car to be undercover so they must have drove it. Got in it had a play and then the GPS wouldn't work, the windows wouldn't go up and something else I can't recall. Salesman was rabbiting on about this and that and low battery voltage etc etc, but when you were already nervous about their perceived unreliability it didn't help! I am sure there's plenty of good ones but the few bad ones you here about are horrid. Mod over at Myswag has just been to hell and back with a Rangie sport and ended up settling and getting it taken back after 12-18mths.

Yeh I have gone and discussed the price with a dealer 80k plus 2.5k for metallic paint !!! He said they included the tech pack which was sat nav and reversing camera. Said other packs were over priced such as black pack 4.5k etc. At least he was honest. Nice thing to note with the Landrover is that if you work for a company on there list you get 3 years free servicing as well as floor mats. But I do think they are over priced and wont have the same resale value as the Toyota will have. So I have decided to go the trusty V6 Prado yet again. Cant complain really built well and drive well. Just need to get the price right for a VX.

Mate your not wrong on resale. I just helped the boss into a new GXL as it was $2k more than what dealers wanted for used! And @straydingo was getting quotes on used VXs for the same money as a couple of dealers wanted for new. It's insane at the moment, only thing stops me from rolling mine over early is 1 the wife 2. Moving all the accessories 3. The wife 4. Really comfortable with current and it's only got 45k 5. The wife.
