@meandher (a frost) I hear what your saying that's why I have cut my diving right back almost to the point where I will find every excuse in the book to get out of going. I still go every now and then but only if the shark shield is on though. No shark shield, no diving, I have promised myself and my family. I was the first person out of my 5 diving mates to start wearing a shark shield and now all of them wear one now after numerous sighting as near misses.

As to that guy who got taken buy a shark at Cottesloe, I new him through work and my dealings with him were always pleasant. I use to talk to him all of the time about diving/fishing and swimming but never talk about sharks though.
Life can be cruel sometimes.

RIP @ Ken

actually sitting lower than normal, normally the side writing is all out of the water, due to daughter on board its a bit lower.
the venus is a small one from there range , light 19 kgs and only rated for about 90 kgs, previous pic has about 100kg on board. notice freeboard just with daughter, bit higher.

the prowler fishing range has a higher passenger rating in kgs.

daughter loves the outdoors, even paddles by herself at 5 yo when its flat.

noticed prowler on ebay $1000 with sounder and accessories second hand, just to give you an idea on price.View attachment 24625
@Colin&Sue Even with your daughter on board it sits really well though even know it's ratted at 90kgs. Your daughter looks really at home in the water in that photo even at the age of 5. I made a mistake and showed my 11 year old your photo and now he insisting hey wants to do the same thing. I said now worries but only in lakes and calm rivers.
I will check out the prowlers as well when I get to BCF

My next Yak mod will probably be a Lecky motor, saw one and thought thats the go.

Many, many years ago as a young Sailor I was going to be a ships diver but swimming in the Bankok River (dead cows and bodies) and a dive in Jervis and Hervey Bay seeing wall to wall Noahs turned me off.
Have seen some big bities out at sea.

Want are the motors worth @Drover ?

Wow that would have been a eye opener swimming in the Bankok river.
As for the bities that's why I only swim with a shark shield and so far no one has been taken wearing one which is a massive incentive to wear one I say.

The electric motors are only a couple of hundred, just mount at the back, small gell battery and away you go. Idon't mind the paddling until the bloody wind gets up. Bankok River is like a frantic swim in a sewer.

RE; Electric motors on kayaks.

Make sure you have a kill switch tethered to you. Have heard stories of guys in yaks falling out with the yak still motoring away. Not good when your out at sea.

I have a Hobie Outback fishing kayak which I take on most trips. Its advantage is it is very stable, easy to fish and paddle (peddle) at the same time. Moving about subtly is a unique kayak advantage. With a traditional paddle kayak you can paddle, and you can fish; but its difficult to do both together. I peddle well over 10 km in a session with relative ease. The drive unit is very natural movement and very energy/pace efficient. With the Hobie you can throw a trolling lure out the back, a baited rig to one side and cast lures on the other. The top of the Hobie is flat, designed to strap upside down on flat roof racks. You can lock it to the roof racks with a bike lock through the peddle box which is important while travelling. Without the gory details, you can achieve number ones without risking a roll over. Its no light weight, but its easy enough to lift on and off the roof racks one up. The beach trolley is storable onboard, as is everything else you need for a whole days fishing. I have a sounder, nav lights and anchor lights. My eight year old can comfortably and safely sit in the back for a fish off the beach. It has an anchor and plenty of storage, and it pretty comfortable. You can also leave all the gear in the car and throw the kayak in the water for a muck about with the kids. You can also go where boats can't get into.

There a little more expensive than the cheapy kayaks, but they are well worth it; and importantly they hold their value and always sell second hand.

@Crusty181 you forgot to mention that when the wind start to blow a bit, the bloke with a paddle is doing it hard while the bastard in the Hobie paddles past looking laid back and at ease..........................

....... and, as I discovered, north of my launching spot slogging against a nice southerly and running tide and getting very tired and going nowhere. Lifting my lovely big full catch bag out of the water was taking off the damn handbrake.

We have a marine park local to me, but for some reason the fish haven't been told where the buoys are and where boundary finishes ..... the kayak is the perfect sniper to wander along the line just outside the buoys. I only ever catch the fish who haven't read to memo.
