Yes true @dagree but I had to sell the 18 foot Pacemaker to help pay for the new van. So now I find myself wanting to get out there and do some fishing.
As for the sharks yes there are plenty hence the reason I have stopped scuba diving. I have a shark shield and that has worked and I feel this has saved me on two occasions, but I still like getting out there and paddling around and doing some fishing/skin diving in selected spots.
Plus there are a lot of rivers/lakes too that I wouldn't mind taking the boys out to do some exploring on.

@skippy
Used to dive as well over 20 years ago but due to mild asthma issues had to give it away hence the fishing from a boat nowadays. No shark shields in those days just "gut feelings" and eyes in the back of the head. Only had one encounter with a grey coat (Grey Nurse at 5 metres and the 1 1/2 metre bugga looked 10 metres long lol)

:focus: Looked into getting a kayak last year and best I found was the Hobie. Do a google on WA fishing forums as there is some good info on them.

It's was about 3 years ago I thought my number was up on the 3 mile of Mindarie.
Swam down to about 24 meters and started following the reef looking for some crays/Dhuewy's and before I new it's a grey nurse. Having seen heaps of grey nurses I wasn't too concerned I mean come on there the puppy dogs of the ocean. This was a big boy though at about 4 to 41/2 meters long. The tail was about 2 1/2 to 3 foot high so I new it was a good size. Not a problem so myself and my 2 of my other mates went to swim around. Then the shark swam off like a bullet out of sight. I think we spooked it. Anyway kept on swimming then before I could turn around to face it with my spear gun the bl00dy bugger was coming in at me at about triple running speed and then turn of at about a foot away from my head. All 3 of us swam underneath the 3 mile ledge until our air started running out and then we had to swim back to the boat. By this stage the grey nurse has gone and that was the longest swim I have ever done I can tell ya.:eek-53:
I still believe that if it wasn't for the shark shield I feel I would have been taken for shore.

:focus: Ok @dagree thanks and I will have a look at the Hobie's and see how I go:encouragement:

@skippy , I typed a whole response here and it just vanished. In short Hobie. Check out a Hobie Outback. If you are keen to fish, want a good kayak that will last you years and have a spare $2.5k for a new kayak the Hobies are the only way to go as they have a pedal system. You can buy them second hand. Like anything the newer the better.

gi day skippy, Hobbie are a great unit, and the mirage paddle system gives you hands free, but pricey.
if you want any questions answered in relation to the bobbie, give Scott loving a call on 03 59756399 thats his shop, he was the original australian distributer after taking it on following the Hobbie cats ( small sailing boats ) and still sells them from his shop. he also fishes all the kayak comps and demos units most weekends here in melbourne, but he would be more than happy to answer questions and steer you to a good local dealer, as he would know them.

if its not Hobbie and you want to paddle, have a look at ocean kayak made in new zealand and distribute red by BLA ( bob littler agencies )
the model i would look at is a prowler or prowler range , rod holders, fwd hatch, rear well, centre small hatch, options for heaps of accessories, i.e. sounder, sail, live well, electric motor, rear cover, anchor systems, rudder etc etc. each unit has a serial number moulded in , thick side walls and bottom,
easy to paddle and stable. think rrp is about $1300 but don't quote me, or you could get one second hand under $1000.

hope this helps.

just to wet your appetite , this is my ocean kayak x 2, they are the small model so there light to handle onto my raised 4wd roof , 19kgs. 11ft long. but still take me and the daughter even though they are a single. model of these are the venus, and u can see the width and stability. mine optioned with sounder and gps, rod holders and sail for a quick trip back if the wind is in the right direction. comes with front hatch for storage and rear well. if anyone wants to know the spot is Lake tyres Vic, recommend the beachfront holiday retreat . you can get most of the ocean kayaks in camo colour if you want. dedicated fishing look at the prowler range, if thats the way u want to go.

Caught this 49cm Bream in my Hobie flicking a crappy lure during an ABT comp at Marlo.

Kayak fishing can be very addictive, hence my old user name maccayak. When we went to Tuross Heads, I took the yak and my son and I had a ball. We caught unlucky flathead and bream. It is great also to travel to spots that you cant easily get to and flick some lures from the shore. I am more into catch and release. That fish in the above shot travelled around with me for two hours in the live well, then it was weighed and released. You need to buy a kayak that will suit your body size, budget and family requirements. @Colin&Sue , you are in my neck of the woods. I fish locally during the warmer months, and travel up the bay when the snapper are on.

G'day @Colin&Sue
Those photos look great and how flat was it out on that day....Seeing that photo's inspires me to get out there and go for a paddle. Phone number saved as well thank U for Scott's phone number:thumb: I two am thinking of getting a sounder to aid in MABYE catching a few fish. As am think a rudder would be good as well. I might try looking at gumtree too.

Stability would be a plus for sure as I am growing outwoods every year:bounce: The Venus sits quite well in the water after looking at your photo. I am looking for a ocean Kayak now after seeing your photo's as I really like the idea of plenty of freeboard. How do the kiddies go in the Kayak too?
