Here is our camp oven see if you can spot it on the edge of the fire......... I took the photo standing under the awning of our OB Hawk hoping it would be ok

Luckily it was just about done, it was a roast with vegies.

We love our camp oven too. We use the smaller round one which is fine for 2 adults and 2 older kids. Makes the best ever scone/damper and great for easy peasy beef braise. I'm quite fussy with the cleaning/oiling routine, keeps the pot in tip top condition and ready for next time. We keep ours in a canvas bag :hungry:
Could you tell us your cleaning oiling routine Wanda? Is that just after every use you oil? What type of oil?

@17triton it was a freak hailstorm mate camping at Sheepyard Flat. The sky was clear then without warning it went black dumped hail for 10 or so minutes then clear skies again. Lots of tents had the hail destroy them.

Mrs Cruza was at one end of the Hawk and me the other and we had to yell to each it was that loud in there, very surreal.

And the roast turned out a treat :hungry:

Yes the mighty camp oven is such a great tool this is one I done in the oven in the house with the same results. I got the idea from my grandmother. Another hint we have used ours camping for heating taco shells. Yummo.

Thanks guys i picked up some heavy duty gloves and a lid lifter yesterday and will get a trivet thanks Cracka, I think dad has that book of Jack Absolems so thanks Dave, Xpandafan you say a box is better than those canvas bags?
Just my preference. The cast iron (Furphy) is more fragile than the steel Bedourie. I made up a crate that everything fitted in. Doesn't slide about, tip over or bang things with the handle protrusions. Can put camp oven in dirty or still warm if necessary. Box doubles as a work table/ seat as well. I also include a hessian bag to rest lid on etc, so doesn't get covered in dirt, leaves or ash.

Good points there Xpandafan. A box will be next me thinks. I like the hessian bag tip too thanks mate.

Even though it's a bit of a pain, straight after I have used our oven, I fill it with water, enough to cover the baked on food stuck to the sides. Don't put cold water into a hot pot or visa versa because they can crack or warp. Place it back in the coals and let it boil for a bit, it will help soften the stuck bits. Let it cool a little, just enough so it's not too hot to handle and then scrub out with a firm dish scrubbing brush. We keep ours in the camp oven carry bag just for this purpose. I was told never to use dishwashing detergent as it can leach into the porous surface and taint the taste of your next meal. When clean and wiped dry I spray it with canola oil or vegetable oil but not lard or fat, it can soak into the surface and go rancid). I bought a hand pump oil bottle which I fill with my own oil, pump in some pressure and presto, oil spray! Yes, I oil it every time. I did leave it one time and because we were in the camper, moisture got to it and caused some rust so I oil it every time and have had no more problems and it's seasoned and ready for next time. Hope this helps, Sharon.

Well we christened the camp oven yesterday lunchtime at home, up early to get the fire going to get some coals. We cooked a rolled leg of lamb, spuds, pumpkin and parsnip and it tasted beautiful only thing they didn`t brown up much, it was very tender and moist maybe need to crack the lid next time to dry take some moisture out?

Perhaps a little less water in the oven to start off? Not sure how cracking the lid will go. Could be worth a try.

There was no water in the oven Cracka just the meat and veg on a trivet, there seemed to be some juice come out of the lamb and maybe the veggies probably a couple of mm deep on the bottom?
