I insulted a Tojo Rep once after taking a Prado and Kluger for a run, I said they were nice but no way would I have something with those names...................................I was interested in a ute anyway but did enjoy the test drive...................F250 Diesel yes please, or the big arse Chev.

Yeah the silverado 2500 is awesome, just don't try and either park it at a Westfields or go over some drainage berms in the high country!

:fencing::flame::fencing::flame: Now I am a Cruiser owner but I think the new Patrol can't be discounted. A '13 model can be bought for less than a Prado at the moment. And they tow 3500kg. Flame suit on!

depending on who you talk to, the fuel economy of that 5.8l is astounding
one guy said something about 16l/100 (not towing) but a respectable 19l/100 when towing
(Ive also heard of horror stories of 24l/100 when towing)
I wonder if it really is "how you drive........."

24l/100 is cheaper than my brother's 200 series diesel @ 22l/100 if you compare the cost of petrol compared to diesel

I find it interesting that while a Grand Cherokee can tow 3500kg (diesel) the Pradoo can't and the same for some similar sized vehicles, while I love my Jeep if I get a bigger van it will have to be replaced by something bigger I reckon, Cruiser or Patrol no stuffing around with suspension mods just throw the Yak on the roof, gear in back, hook up and roll, no ginning around , rock and roll. If we still had the mob here I would need a flaming bus.

I work with a guy and he has one and drives like a hire car! He gets around 21L/100. He put his 18ft Expanda Outback on the back and got under 20's when towing at 100km/h. I think that is pretty good. He also has a Range Rover Sport (Supercharged V8) and says the Patrol tows the Expanda much easier than the Rangie.

I looked on Carsales and a 2013 model ST-L can be had for around $60K, which I think is pretty good.

We have the diesel patrol and get around 13l/100km around town. Towing our old swan we got 20 - 22l/100km (me driving........ I must be a lead foot). I'm scared to see what it does towing our new van.

@bigcol I think you can, just need to get an engineer to issue new compliance plate and then re-register it, but it cant exceed the manufacturers max specs.

From memory the Prado is 2990kg GVM, and you can bump it up to 3350kg legally.

Having said that, the extra weight plus tow would make the 3ltr diesel struggle and gearbox would overheat I reckon. It's not impossible to overcome provided you have deep pockets.

I'm with @dagree, a 100 or 200 series would be the go. If the Ranger's reliability was better I would go that as an alternative for the extra carry and tow capability. The Paj would be forth on the list... I might even slot the old Patrol at number 5... :becky: but you need to be a math wiz to work out legal limits for those
