Which Generator is everyone using and why did you choose that one?

I spoke to our local Honda dealer who is a friend of mine (he is biased I know) and he suggested that the cheap units can affect things like air conditioners and he has heard of cases where the air conditioner motors have been burnt out?

Hey Kev

There are a couple of issues with the cheaper ones.

There can be issues with a modified sine wave inverter generator as this does not produce a pure sine wave output, just a square type wave. Some devices like rectifiers and microwaves require the full voltage at the peak of the sine wave otherwise it may not be able to run correctly, hence drawing through more current and possibly burning out.

Also the cheaper ones have issues when you need to get them serviced as the parts are not easily procured and a lot of the agents won't touch them.

Yamaha and Honda are full sine wave inverter generators with service backup if something goes wrong. I have a Yamaha EF2400is that is a bit heavier but has enough power to run everything including the house when the power (often) fails where I live.

Couple of previous posts HERE and HERE to get some more information from...

Cheers. ;)

Sorry Big Gee, still getting the gist of all this and learning about this whole caravanning thing!

We have a Heron 2.2 Split System Air Conditioner.

Thanks for your advice, it is very much appreciated.

Cheers

So your Heron takes 2200 watts to run.

http://www.aircommand.com.au/product.php?product=heron-2.2

By the book this is too big of a load for the Honda EU20i. However I know of two different families both with Windsor Rapids that successfully run the 2.2's with this gennie.

If your budget allows, a better alternative would be The EU30iu with a rated output of 2600 watts

http://powerequipment.honda.com.au/Super_Quiet/EU30is

The Yamaha EF2400is is positioned in the market to better handle itself for your requirements but I fear the issue you will have as quite a few of us do is that it is somewhat heavier & bigger than the EU20i.

Yamaha talk in KVA & claim a 2.0 kva rated capacity & 2.4 kva peak. 1 KVA is equal to about 960 watts!

All said & done, my money would be on the Honda EU30is. It will leave you with some power in reserve which can only be handy.

Check out www.generatorplace.com.au

They quite often run some really good specials on the Honda's.

2.2 is the cooling capacity not the currant draw, the heron 2,2 pulls 4.o amps on cooling and 6.0 amps on heat, then convert that to watts (amps x volts =watts) is 1560watts on heat and 960 on cool , our eu2 runs ours fine ,barks abit when on heat

Good pick up Hornet :crutch:, Thanks for the correction.

ok

to redeem myself

Honda EU20i or
Yamaha EF2000is.

I have posted my thoughts on both units in this thread. it's a bit of the old Holden v's Ford debate! both are good so buy whichever better suits your needs!

If had my choice again I would have gone with the Yamaha , yeah the Honda will run everything ,but I've had it trip on overload on a hot day running a/ c, and under high load it's quite loud, and chews the juice but you can put a long range tank on them ,seen the yammy in action and they just do it easier , but it's a bit heavier and bigger

Now where to find the best price.......................have found a place in Melbourne with a price of $1799 seems to be the best I can find.

That sounds pretty good. Usually they can't get the price down very much but make sure you ask for the extras like cover, trolley, security leash, etc...
