There is a company in Newcastle to is engineering the 5 door prado's to legally upgrade the towing capacity for 150 Prado's to 3.0t towing capacity with a 300kg ball weight. They upgrade the shocks, springs and airbags and will have the car re-engineered to meet RTA requirements. The company from memory is Beresfield 4x4.

Yeah I've see that somewhere before. But I also heard that it voids all warranty. Worth looking into though. Thanks heaps, Steve

My 2c. Don't focus on fuel usage. Recently we went from a Prado TD to a Prado V6 petrol. Towing with the TD we got around 16lphk. Towing with the petrol we average around 22.

But the difference in the two is night and day. WIth the petrol overtake when you want to overtake. When you are not towing the difference in economy with Prados in petrol and diesel is not that marked. On the highway the D4D will get around the 10lphk, our V6 regularly gets 11.6.

And, the big one, no diesel carbon issues. I love diesel, did my trade on them, but there is a reason they get reasonable performance out of them nowadays. The electronics ring every last bit out of them and reliability is falling. The petrol in the prado is one of the sweetest around.

After investing 50K on a van, and 60k on the tug, fuel is not really a big issue. Just my thoughts. :)

Is that you Dazzler;)

I have had 2 Prado's now a 90s V6 and a 120s 1KZ, and have been happy with both. So after much thinking about my next tow car, trying to decide between various dual cabs, waiting for the new Prado motors, new forth coming Everest, the current Isuzi MUX, I finally bit the bullet and decided to buy one of the last current Prado with the D4D motor as the pricing was pretty sharp. I pick up a new 15 model GX 5 seater Auto later this week with tint ,mats, towbar for a cheese burger under $52000 which was a saving on the price of ordering a August build with the 2.8lt motor and considering there is only a gain of 3kw/30NM could not see any real advantages.
As our van is one of the 12.37 outback weighing around 1280kg I didn't need a big towing capacity so the D4D will do the job with a little more go than my current 1KZ motor. Now looking forward to a new build up, I might even do a build up and include the expanda as we don't see too many 12.37 on these pages.
