Hi All.. Have just purchased a new 18.58-1 from the recent Brisbane Show. We currently have a Landrover Discovery 3 which is due for replacement. Looking at a new Prado 3ltr Diesel. Apparently the new release Prado that is due out later this year has dropped to a 2.8 Diesel. I know the current model has a 2500 tow capacity, but I have heard the new 1 will push out to 3000kg. Thoughts from anyone would be much appreciated.

Hey there mate and congrats on the order. I love my 150 series prado. It is comfortable, handles exceptionally well off road and hasnt skipped a beat. But you're right, the towing capacity sits at 2.5t. I would be interested to hear confirmation about the 3t limit change...would be a great thing in my opinion. I really dont think that towing the new 18 footer with a 2.5t limited vehicle is a good idea as you will be limited in what extras you can put on as well as how much you can carry. Although I have seen a heap of vehicles out there carrying way more than what they are specced at. I am sure that we have all seen them.

Hi and thanks... Yeah I too have seen dome disastrous looking rigs. Love our Disco, but with replacement Discoveries at 20-25k more than a prado, I'd say Prado is the go. Have friends with a Kakadu, and they swear by it for towing. But concerned about the drop to 2.8 in the new model. Also obviously concerned about the 2.5t limit. The build of the new 18.58 I have been told it will come in just under 2500, incl payload, but not fussed on being on the limit on anything, if you know what I mean. Always 1 to want a good buffer....

Thanks Bluey...
Yeah I don't want to be pushing it either. I will probably want to be adding a few extras, so may need to look at the cruiser as well. Something I won't jump into though, being an extra 20 odd k than the new prado.

There is very little consumption difference between the 100 TD and the 200 TTD if driven like for like. Get seduced by the power of the 200 and yes it will use more. But not by stupid margins imo

im confused enough as I scratch my head wondering what to do drove a 200 it was nice and powerful felt like home but if im getting 13 to 15 in prado others say 20 to 22 in 200 the 100 must be in the middle oh bugger me stuffed if I know :frusty:

Was getting around 18 to 18/100 with the 2000 4.7L petrol 100 series around town but never did compare the usage when towing.... Wasn't game ;) But it did tow the 16.49.3 tourer as if it wasn't behind us :)

My 2c. Don't focus on fuel usage. Recently we went from a Prado TD to a Prado V6 petrol. Towing with the TD we got around 16lphk. Towing with the petrol we average around 22.

But the difference in the two is night and day. WIth the petrol overtake when you want to overtake. When you are not towing the difference in economy with Prados in petrol and diesel is not that marked. On the highway the D4D will get around the 10lphk, our V6 regularly gets 11.6.

And, the big one, no diesel carbon issues. I love diesel, did my trade on them, but there is a reason they get reasonable performance out of them nowadays. The electronics ring every last bit out of them and reliability is falling. The petrol in the prado is one of the sweetest around.

After investing 50K on a van, and 60k on the tug, fuel is not really a big issue. Just my thoughts. :)

when we did our Exmouth trip in 2013 I used the Bosses Kakadu - 4.7L V8 Land cruiser
averaged about 20/100 towing my 16' - absolutely great fun to drive and tow - thirsty but

a mate has a 100TD (yes it has been tweaked a fair bit - UFI Turbo & Injector pump) and he gets around 18/100 towing his 20' coramal van
his brother has a 200TTD Sahara - tows similar Van (but Windsor), and gets 22-24/100
yes it tows it like its not there, but it drinks like nothing else...........

I will stick to my poor old 4.2 Patrol - 14/100 towing at 100km/per/hour

looked at v8 as said heavy on fuel but 100 series 6 cyl turbo diesel is very good just have to find a good one I think 06 is the last of the 6cyls ????? I mite be wrong on that
Thanks mate. I have to buy a new car, through my business, so will need to keep looking. Didn't particularly want to spend 90k though on a new 200. Actually thy are probably more now. Ha. Cheers
