Just an update for those interested in seeing how insurance works when you want to claim

CIL has to date been very good. While the claim has not been approved yet they have been prompt in booking inspections and responding to me. I will confirm to group status of claim when I hear anything.

Apparently had there not been so much taken the claim would have been approved via photo's alone, but when they require an external accossor the report they require to approve or decline takes a while.

FYI - Van repairs listed at $8k as they are going to replace the roof due to a tear where the air conditioning was removed. Air conditioner and labour are the biggest components of the repair amount. I must say I'm happy with the repairer for wanting to do it right. Plus any repairs come with life time warranty and new Air Conditioner and TV with their associated warranties.

The sad part is prior to this theft/break-in we had no intention of selling the van and even now we are divided within our houshold but I don't want to find somewhere else secure to store so on the market it will go, maybe we will get another trip away in it for Melbourne Cup weekend prior to sale.

Oh our excess is $200, originally CIL charged me $400, but they called the other day to say that was a mistake and they would refund $200.

Thanks Jason for the update, what was the response of the storage mob? Do they accept any responsibility at all, any explanations how security was breached?
Sound like you are getting sorted, our Jayco dealer recommended CIL to us when the van arrives, good to here they have been pretty good.

Thx

In regards to storage, they don't accept any responsibility but did refund my money, my wife would not let me put it back in the same place. It was interesting that Police told me break in was over weekend. When I enquired why I wasn't told until Tuesday lunchtime the storage place said Police were wrong break in was on Monday night. I'm still amazed how they got the Air Conditioner out without any more damage given the weight. I suggested to Police it looked like an inside industry job but they denied it given the widespread places hit. Certainly a lot of stuff gone from ours and going from others in the Geelong area.

How is access given to the storage area? Did these guys just drive in and drive out? Any camera footage, rego numbers?
We will be sticking ours in storage as well when it arrives in a few weeks and am a little concerned.

Thanks for the update Jason.
Lets hope you can come up with another option other than selling. As they say "don't let the bastards win"

Well sadly, we advertised the van for sale. It only took 6 days from time of first advertising. I must say the family is not happy with me for selling but I didn't want to go through that again. The insurance company (CIL) was fantastic as was the caravan repair place (Prestige Caravan Repairs in Geelong) - Robert is a top guy and the repairs quality! Certainly happy ended up there rather than at the Jayco dealer we purchased from, right next door.....

My wife and I hope to get a van again later in life but in the mean time will hire for holidays as needed.

Until then happy and safe travels everyone.

Hi Holden_man,

They forced a large door at rear of property to gain access .This section apparently did not have alarm sensors, even though I had been told it was alarmed. No Camera's but I knew that going in. No word from Police since initial report they did so guess a dead end.

It sure is a sad story overall. Terrible that you had to go through all that, and i can totally understand why you decided to sell.

Best of luck for the future.

In Nigeria a mob bashed then set fire to thieves caught stealing lap top computers.

Thats a bit extreme - I'd just set fire to the people who have messed these good folks around but thats just me........a big softy at heart! It won't be their fault, centrelink payments aren't enough to support a decent drug habit plus go to Bali twice year on!

"Bucking Fastards!"

They used to hang horse thieves didn't they?

Sorry to hear about your bad luck Jason. Storing van is always a problem.... sorry that you have given up on caravaning for now.
