Will a kluger (company car) tow a 17.56-2 ob from Melbourne to brisbane with no additional gear in the van? Not my ideal setup but car doesn't get changed over until October and I'm not sure I can wait that long!!!

Jokes aside you need a brake controller. You could rig one semi temp but also make sure the van was dead motherless empty. The Kluger is rated at 2t and I reckon a 17ft would come close to this empty? Owners would know.

If the 2T is the tow capacity of the car I don't think it will work unfortunately.

What I noticed is that Jayco are no longer displaying Tare weights on there plates.

This was evident on all vans at the Sydney show and @relgate mentioned it was due to confusion of Tare / ATM / GTM etc.

If this is the case it would mean the only numbers you have stamped on the plate are in excess of the klugers 2T limit.

So from a technical point the car may be able to tow it but the numbers could prove a problem if checked.

Just some food for thought....

Yeah the numbers won't work with transport even if they list Tare. But if you could prove it weighed under 2t you would be right in the event of something nasty. If you must do it. Pick it up get a weighbridge ticket and go. How many times has anybody here been checked anyway?

Seeing as though it's a company, would your boss be happy if something happened and you weren't insured?
All 17.56-2OB's will have an ATM of over 2000kg.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

There is a lot of confusion about what is legal and what is not. My understanding is that if the van is under 2T, then you can tow it, regardless of the ATM. Others, however, have commented that it is the ATM that the authorities will look at in case of an incident, especially if it is not practical to weigh the van at that point.

I'm with @achjimmy . Get a weigh bridge certificate/reciept showing the weight of the van before you head off. Shouldn't cost much. Assuming the van is under 2T then I cant see a problem (but I'm ot a cop or an insurer! :)). Are you able to speak to the insurer about it?

Yes there is a lot of confusion around weights not just vans but fourbies too.

But practically if it's not two tonne it's not two tonne? What about a car trailer. They are often rated to carry above a vehicles tow rating. So you add the Tare plus load and tow it with what is legal. No different here. Ask your insurer advise them in writing you will be towing a certified <2t van with your Kluger to QLD.

Has anybody here ever weighed there van straight after picking up from Jayco ? Iam very suspicious of there weights. My towball weight didn't add up and cause I specified 375kg payload on the order when our van turned up with far less than this the dealer quickly got another plate organized !

Again how many cases of insurance is refused? They need to prove that the accident is the result of direct violation it's not that easy when it's all said and done.

TOWING RATIO REQUIREMENT
The loaded mass of the trailer must not exceed
the lesser of:
Rated capacity of the towbar and tow coupling.
Maximum towing capacity of the vehicle.
Maximum carrying capacity of the trailer.
Maximum rated carrying capacity of the tyres.

______

Judging by that statement if the GTM is higher than the capacity of the tow bar no dice...

One would assume this is why Jayco has removed the Tare weight from there plates to conform to this type of ruling.

As in you need to make sure your vehicle can tow the ATM + GTM of the trailer not the tare weight.

Hope this makes sense....

Tbh Expanda just confirms what we said. Clear as mud. If the van is unladen and under two tonne
It doesn't exceeded any of those four points.

This would be a good one for the caravaners forum. It'd would go on for 30 pages with punch ups and all.:p

Rated capacity of the towbar and tow coupling. Check
Maximum towing capacity of the vehicle. Check
Maximum carrying capacity of the trailer. This is referring to a loaded van????
Maximum rated carrying capacity of the tyres. Check

doesn't help with the Klugar, but give Caravan Relocation Services a call and get a quote.

We had a chat with them at the Melb Caravan shown and kept their details - if something happened to me the missus thinks she would be unlikely to be able to bring the van home herself, so they are a safety net. But they also do general transport from A to B.
(I'm guessing its more expensive than fitting a brake controller tho)

Be a good option though, especially if you cant have anything in the van anyhow.

Wow thanks for all the responses. Spoke to the dealer today and they are even so cautious saying anything about this stuff which I don't blame them. As I'm so much of a safety Sam and don't want to risk my pride and joy it looks like we will just have to wait till October to do pick up instead when we have the new company vehicle being a holden Colorado. We have our hearts set on going down to do pick up a factory tour and then see some sights like the great ocean road and holiday on the way up. So looks like I'm going to just have to be much more patient then I can handle....... More nights just dreaming about my expanda soooo sad....
