We have the standard stone deflector supplied new from Jayco when we purchased our Starcraft Outback 17-58-3. We recently completed a 7700km journey with close to 200km of corrugated roads......not one ounce of damage to the front of our van or damage caused by stones etc rebounding back onto our vehicle. I agree the Stone Stomper is a great product and superior, but if you are only doing a few off road trips with corrugations/dirt roads try the Jayco product

Just my 2 cents worth

Last time I looked they were similar in price. I'l order a stomper eventually. Also the Jayco screen type doesnt seem to fit to well on the standard Jayco draw bar. My Starcraft has a forward opening gas bottle cover.

I have both on my vans, home made stone stomper and stone guard. Both work great, still get some stone chips from sideway flying rocks, but did GCR ( Great Central Road ) 1200 km dirt and stones, and all was good on car and van. I also stone proof under the van as well, extra mud flaps infront of important stuff, and cover all the plumbing.

GregW, any chance of a photo of how you mounted your jerry can holders please? I have one mounted on my A frame but not happy with the way it protrudes below the frame. Yours look like they sit higher off the ground?

Hi, Dove not a problem, i will look for some photos. Its really just two steel tubes. Inthink they were 30x 45 x 3, then bolted them to the A frame with long bolts and nuts to a plate under the A frame. But will look for photos, caravan is currently in storage so cant take any new photos or would.

I'm interested in how you carry your jockey wheel.

Is it upturned and clamped in place? If so, any problems with it travelling that way?

I'm sick of squeezing ours in the back of vehicle and, if this works, I'd be delighted.

Hi Dobbie,

I just wind the jocket wheel up tight, and turn it upside down. No problems at all, only issue is that the winding knob can get knocked around from stones. I hated the same thing putting the jockey wheel in the car or van, mespecially if it was wer or muddy. That photo is of our expanda btw, have a full size van now and have done something slightly different for jockey wheel on this van, as I mainly use a hydrolic jack on the big van. I have attached photo for you

Cheers

Greg

Thanks for that. I'll check it out on ours to see if it's feasible with the stone guard in place. Hadn't thought of just upending it.

I've been playing around with various ideas of mounting it on a frame behind the stone guard but will have to check effect on ball weight. I get paranoid about weights and balance.

I'll let you know how it goes!

I put a new bracket across the A frame, used it a few times like that, but now the Jockey Wheel sits in the box when travelling..........

it was good, because all the cables sat across the handle, and kept off the ground and clear from things

I might look at that option.

How did you attach the extra bracket to the a frame? Welding ain't in my box of talents so, if I do it, will have to get it done....or find another way. I guess sikaflex wouldn't be strong enough.

Hey Bigcol......how's your back now?
