There's has been numerous blitz's on vans etc. of the last few years mostly checking weights/ball weights and shackles which must be rated, don't know about lengths etc.
when my van was trucked back to Melbourne recently, it was picked up by a rigid flat bed truck, he had another van on the truck so towed mine behind, he measured the overall length of truck and van from Bullbar to the spare on the van, my van is 8.1 from tip to tail said he had a metre to spare.
funny when we took delivery of the van in Melbourne we towed it to Phillip Island then up the coast all the way home never got pulled over once for having no plate on the van as it was unregistered. I did have the permit and all purchase papers in the door pocket ready though just in case.
