I've seen a number of threads on here in the past regarding the need to have rated shackles, and about people being fined for non compliance.

I just saw this article by the NRMA pretty much myth busting the whole thing.

Thought it might be of interest.

Yeah It's funny isn't it? Pretty much been busted before but you gotta ask yourself in this day and age of copy/cheap 5h1+ everything being available why wouldn't you for the cost of a $10 shackle not use rated quality shackle?

So we have an 6 ton safety chain with a 1.5t rated shackle because a higher rated shackle wont fit.......... probably why its not legislated.

Not to mention the 6 tonne chain is welded on to a chassis by a welder of "what qualifications"???

I know that the only time I have had a trailer detach from a vehicle( and it was a loaded car trailer). was that the chain held it long enough to belt the tailgate in 3-4 times then broke off at the weld, not the dodgy shackles we all used back then!

Given the standard of the rest of the Jayco trades, I'm not thinking they have specialist welding professionals looking after that task

The only time we had an accidental unhitch was with a camper trailer, fully loaded so heavy.

Some idiot ...me...didn't fully engage the hitch so we parted company with the trailer after a speed bump.

Interesting exercise trying to lift a heavy trailer back on to the tow bar. Shackles and chains didn't break but only because we were moving very slowly. A frame just subsided. No idea what their rating was....we never knew they were rated and had no idea of any of that stuff then!

What a different world we now live in.

No not safe, no indication of safe working load, can become unclipped of the chain twists and opens the gate.

Only able to take load in one direction, and all load is transferred through a tiny pin in the hinge.
