I would say yes.
If it hasn't been built yet ask your dealer to see if the cabling for the camera can be routed during the build. Will make life a lot easier come instal time,
unless they now offer a complete camera option.

I've only towed my van for about 1200km but I must say I didn't really feel the need for a camera yet. I guess it would be handy for backing into spots, and I can see on the highway it would be more relaxing being able to see behind you rather than checking mirrors every 3 seconds. Do all the truck drivers have cameras?

Actually i quite like having ours on the back, I mainly use it to make sure there is nothing behind me sometimes when changing lanes. Stupid cars love sitting so close you don't see them and then bitch if you cut them off. El cheapo from china that plugs in to the unit on the dash. Made up a switch to flick on or off whenever i need it.

Yes. I know it is not legal, but I don't even bother with mirrors any more.
I installed mine myself.

sorry in my books thats an accident waiting to happen cameras see directly behind and a bit to the sides at least with mirrors you do see more of whats in your blind spots ...
just my thoughts

Actually the camera removes all the blind spots. You need a wide angle camera which gives you much more than a bit of the sides. Then the normal mirrors overlap with the image. I don't know about others but if I have no van on the back of the car my natural rear check is side mirrors and then rear vision mirror. My monitor goes over the rear vision mirror when towing the van.
So what I see is still natural. I see a car approach from behind in the rear vision camera, I see the overtake occur behind the van and then observe the overtake occurring in the normal mirrors of the car.
Mirrors do not see behind a van. Thats why truckers have the sticker that says if you cannot see my mirrors then I cannot see you. The camera however sees all.

Brad I think you should augment your current solution with mirrors. The use of camera and normal car mirrors would create significant black spots at the rear quarters of the van, given the camera cannot see around and forward of the van and your car mirrors cannot see around the van and back. For your safety and others plus you put yourself at risk of a ticket.

I fitted a safety Dave camera before our last trip. I can't remember the specs but it's on his website. Pretty darn good. I have always used mirrors and towed many different things. I still fitted mirrors with the camera but if I had to be without one it would without doubt be the mirrors. My belief is you can never have to much vision but the camera ( remember depends on angle) is awesome. I can see out to the horizon right up to within 1m of the vans bumper and out at like 170 degrees from there. With the Pajeros standard mirrors there is no blind spot towing the 16 ft.. Simply one of the best mods I have done to the van. We went to a few remote sites and more than once had to turn around down a lane or track. Doing that without the need for the wife to get out was great.

I went with the dash monitor as it is bigger but the comments above re mirror clip over makes good sense. I will replace the dash monitor with offroad GPS like hema which also takes a RCA input to allow for the camera.

The only things I would say re the saftey Dave camera, it has a mic which allows you to hear the person behind should you want more info when backing. Whilst it works you then have to turn it down whilst travelling or you get unwanted road noise ( no mute switch) the mic also didn't like getting washed! So I would put little value on this feature. There camera also doesn't use a connection pigtail which some like. And you only had a choice of 10m or 15m cable. I chose 10m for the 16.49 but next time would go 15m (12m would be perfect)

Has anyone used the wireless camera's? I have a friend with one on his car and thought it could be an easier install on the van

Never heard any too many good things about them Paul, Prone to interference etc, but the install would be a breeze.

I agree also that I haven't heard any real success stories with them.
The biggest issue is there is so much between the camera and the monitor that can cause interference, ie, from rear of van to front of car with all that structure in-between.
Wired is really the only way to go IMHO.

Those stickers are the biggest cop out for truckies. I as a driver might not see a small 20cmx10cm mirror on the front of the truck, but it doesn't mean the driver can't see a big car in at least one of them should they look

I also got the camera only from safety Dave .he gave me a short 1 meter lead to chop up as I want to put the wiring through the spare connections on the 14 pin plug ,my brother does it on his van and has no problems with the screen inbuilt in the land cruiser

I did the same thing and ran the wires through the plug. But I had previously found that the connection loosened in the plug because the wires are so small. So I cut the hollow ends off those electrical connectors that you crimp. The hollow end fits perfectly in the connection point inside the plug. So I soldered the electrical connector onto the wire and then fastened onto that inside the plug.
