Every time you would weld an eyelet onto the rails you would be burning off the Gal on the inside, another home for rust.
The mesh I do think would be more trouble than it's worth, rubbish collector and if you had to get at some plumbing on-road it could be messy and the maintenance on cords and hooks would be high.

Used to have wire mesh under the engines but rocks still found there way in and always got stuck and once when one side dropped down I picked up a dead roo, the spanner bangers were so happy.

Plenty of good ideas but I think hanging bungee and mesh could get weighed down if it gets wet and/or muddy, personally I would aim for something abit more permanant if doing this like rubber flap.
