I have an auto tech neighbour who services my Pathie at approx 5000k intervals. Uses Penzoil and a branded oil filter each time. Checks out everything else for about $150-$170. Secret to diesel longevity is regular oil change/filter change. I also have the transmission fluid changed each year ((about $140) at a transmission specialist.

Go to Nissan, It costs about the same and it is genuine.

Also depending on what year model can depend on what type of oil is needed.

If you have the dreaded DPF you will need low ash oil.

I always get my oils and filter through Nissan, so if warranty is ever needed i have all the receipts.

Thanks all, tossing up between -

1) Penrite hpr 5 5w - 40w (Fully Synthetic)

2) Castrol Magnatec Diesel 15W-40W & OR 10W-40W (Don't think this is synthetic)

Leaning towards the penrite but not sure on the viscosity rating given the heat recently.

Just make sure you use a genuine filter Expanda. Yes they are generally expensive but the Ryco's are crap in my opinion. I know people will disagree but i found in our Kluger, Pulsar and Rodeo and its been mentioned with the landcrusiers the use of Rycos generally cause a delay in oil pressure rising on start up noticeable by the light and the rattle!

As Stuart mentioned the use of genuine filter is also a safe guard with warranty whereas with oils all you need to prove is they meet manufacturers specifications.

Yeah, I've heard after market filters have different flow rates which can cause premature engine wear!

Some cheap filters don't have a non-return valve arrangement (think thats what you call it) and so don't hold oil when engine stopped. You then start off "oil-less" each time - probably what Jim describes. Even well known brand filters supplied to supermarkets have different specs to those supplied to trade to keep price low. Saw some cut through middle where difference was obvious. And the 5k change (oil and filter) is way to go.

Cheers all for the advice ended up going with penrite hpr 5 diesel semi synthetic.

Changed it over today and she is running nicely now also chucked a new air filter in her.

It was a bit of a pain in the backside getting the filter back in but out was quite easy just used a claw filter remover and a long extension bar to get t out :).

I use the Penrite 5-40W and change the oil only myself at the 5000 mark and get a full service done at 10000. Nearly 130,000 now and still running well.

Well not oil for the Pathy, though an exhaust. For those longer server members you may remember me asking Santa for a snorkel or an exhaust Christmas before last, well all my Christmas' have come at once.

Last week on the Pathfinder forum a interstate member posted ''free exhaust'' from a Melbourne development firm who do Redback Exhaust work. I fortunate to be surfing the site from mobile while waiting for kids school pickup, called as I saw it and yep I'm booked in.

So, the Pathy is getting a prototype (spinoff from Navara D40) full extreme 2.5'' mandrel exhaust plus dyno tuned for FREE. Plus I get a loan car for the week as they got my car.

Pathy will have to make a return trip a month or so later so a check up inspection (morning consult), so they can view the installion before they go into production to be sold as kit form.

Pace.
