as I am biased, I would suggest the 16'
but if your kids are male/female and you NEED the bunk beds, then go the 17'

either either will be over the limit for the Xtrail I think, but you know this already, and nothing will beat the economy of it

also think about the oldest (if boy) maybe wanting a swag in the awning................

ordering new...........
extended draw bar
as much solar as you can afford
hot water
TV antenna
under slinging the axle if going for Touring model

hope this helps
I like your advice on the 16, we had another trip to caravanland today. Arrived within an hour of closing. We have decided on the 16. The wife prefers the 17 layout, but the weight in a big factor. Just have to decide on demo or new now

Welcome mate @bigcol is from your way and has always provided me with sage advice. My Go to guy for Expanda stuff. And you get the benefit of him being a local.

awwwwwww shucks

thanks mate

I just try to help - having spend thousands of $$ and finding out its not quite what I want...... I would rather help someone else try and get as close to what they want as they can

I have honestly NOT looked at the new layouts in either the 16 or the 17
but
I found I have more bench space in my 16 than most seem to have in their 17's & 18's
I would only (myself) go for a 17 or an 18 if I was wanting a shower / toilet

as to either Demo or New........

well, has the Demo got extended draw bar, enough Solar to light a Cathedral up
AND
the layout you want..............?

if not - go NEW any and every day

as you have already said a newer car will be on the horizon, then maybe the 17 or 18 will be a better option
just have to look at
Pathfinder V6 diesel
Pajero (Spanish = w@nker and or wild Cat) DiD diesel
Playdoh D4D diesel

all fairly good on fuel, and room
again, I am biased - I drive a 4.2 diesel Patrol, and SWMBO drives a V8 Landcruiser.....................
(nothing but the best for me, and she gets the also ran.................)

@Chans027 we did our handover on Saturday and it certainly is a get you in, get your van, get out type of thing at caravanland. We had Mel do our handover and she was great, so i hope you get her. When you do your handover, as said above, pick as much as you can and say your not happy with certain things and they will throw things in for you at the end....theyre allowed to do that. We got a free $80 step and didnt even ask

But make things on your terms and as far as im aware as said by the dealer, everything comes on the boats now and takes about 3 weeks from end of production until pickup.

Ok thanks so much for the tips, will be certain to do that! They didnt mention specifics about boat or truck only that it could be either. I was hoping for truck as we were wanting our van before our trip up to exmouth at the end of June. Will flick them an email in a few weeks and see where we are with it. Im hoping they give me a fair amount of warning about handover so we can be organise ( offload the kids and arrange around work etc and do insurance). Did they give you notice when the van was on its way to WA ?

I knew my van was due to be finished production on the end of March in VIC, and my sales rep said to allow 3 weeks from there to Perth with shipping and Caravanland getting it ready for handover. With that i booked in the 28 April )my week off work) and the van had been there for a week or so....worked out spot on for us with the times they gave us. No they didnt let us know when it was on its way, i just called them around that time for an update but they can give you a specific date that it is due for completion from the factory so you can then add on that 3-4 weeks for a semi accurate time guide.

Speak to your rep and get your chassis number as thats all you need to get insurance sorted, then call back once you've got your rego details, thats what we did.
