Hey Matt, I was thinking about using thin walled round steel spouting for the flue, any thoughts on that?
As long as you can weld it it would be ok. I only have a old arc welder. My flue is overkill but it was just lying in the shed. It is 89 mm x 2 gal shs. Ideally I recon 65 - 75 x 2 or 3 mm round would be good. Mine does seem to draw well, I have read of people using 50 mm but having troubles with drawing.

Good point! I might weld a thicker collar on and slide the flue on to that.

If you are going to cook on it try an angle the flue away from the pig to make it easier to put larger pots or camp ovens on top.

Another thing i would do or will do if i make another is not make the door so big, by that i mean not square the opening is 200mm x 200mm and its a bit low at the front, I`m going to weld a little strap across the inside to stop some ash falling out. i will keep the bottom cut about 30mm higher next time.

Keep those hints coming, no point in me making mistakes if I can learn from others...

That looks pretty fabulous! How well does it throw the heat out the front door?
Yeah its good mate, it helps with what wood you use, I used some sticks from around here that were a bit damp and took a little to get going but it was ok next time i used some good dry yellowbox firewood from the woodshed and noticed more heat but I learnt it`s best to use small chips instead of bigger stuff ( no bigger than my 40mm thickness ) was best.

Matt have you tried using heat beads in it as I use them in my little pot and once going there is no smoke and I get around 5 hours of good heat. I use the easy light heat beads. Looks great to mate.
No i haven`t Chooka but i intend to, I am going to get myself a campoven to try some cooking on it and i will need some heatbeads on the lid as well, you might have noticed I cut a lot of the angleiron off the top of the hotplate so i can make up a heatbead basket to drop in there. Just a question on the depth of the basket I was thinking about 50mm deep do you think that would be deep enough or too deep? The opening is about 165mm x 175 mm so i should get a few heatbeads in there. How big are the heatbeads roughly?

Here is some more pics of my piggy, with the hotplate in the waming position (I have to make another plate yet) and the plate I put in to catch the ash because i made the door to low, and the bunnings gate latch that I put a screw in the end and srewed a little bit of broom handle onto it.

I`ve got plans for mk2 in my head and a spare gas bottle in the shed so there might be another piggy in the sty at some stage, just little changes to the door and legs and flue. Thinking thinking .......

Good stuff Peter I think the second or third pig is best for yourself as well just to iron out the bugs. I just want to make mine a little more compact in the legs and flue. I've picked up some screw in sockets for the legs and will chase up some 2 1/2 to 3" exhaust for the flue.

My mate works at the local exhaust shop - after new year I'll get him to knock up 4 lengths of 3" exhaust pipe with one end flared plus a mandrel bent 45° elbow. That ought a take care of that! I'm toying with the idea of a controlled air intake on both sides but I'll see how I go. I haven't got any legs sorted yet - its just sitting on a frame I had laying around, but I'm struggling to work out how to get the leg angles spot on. Yours looks perfect; any tips?

I made the cooktop surround first then flipped it over and worked from a centre line spaced where the legs were going and used the curve of the bottle to angle the legs outwards both ends ,hope this helps.
