Hello all

Looking at travelling to Kalgoolie and I have found out there are quite a few caravan parks.
Any recommendations in Kalgoolie as which one to stay in. :gossip:

Yes you did @skippy :D

As to which one to call into I'm sorry as it's been over 20 years since I passed that street and I am sure the occupants have changed since then ;)

I haven't been there for quite some time either and my oldest is interested in seeing the under ground tourist mine and the super pit. Oh well back to google to find a caravan park.

Maybe it's time for a re vist after 20 years @dagree

The Prospector Holiday park was ok. The park management was friendly and the facilities were pretty well looked after.
We thought it was ok.
Ok narrowed it down two>>
Prospector : Due to @Panda Shell recommendations....cheers for that!
Goldminer : Most people seemed happy with this park on Wiki Camps.

Decisions decision mmmmm :ranger:

we stayed at the Discovery Parks one on Burt St about 2 years ago now, but was nice, close to town and not bad cost wise from memory - we have an ensuite site........

Kal is a nice place - no large shopping centers as such
Hammond Park (North side of Town is realy nice place for a picknic, lots to see and do
there is a lookout on the North side of Town, near the Water Place
The RFDS has a small Museum at the Airport... very interesting (if its open)
not sure if the Hanault is still open - I thought it was "swallowed" by the Super Pit several years ago
the Gov. Museum was fair to middling - not alot about the gold, but heaps about what happened 65million years ago............
but an entertaining day none the less
they have a few of the old houses setup - man they was small........houses and people

lots to see in Coolgardie
Ben Prior Park is a nice spot for a resties on the way to Kal..... lots of pic's to be taken there...
Coolgardie Train Station (one of the Museums) is fantastic, so is the small museum / Tourist info on the main drag
they have a collection of Glass ware that dates back 2000 years..... impressive
as well as a very LARGE Diorama of Coolgardie in its hey day

can not think of anything else off the top of my head....

if I do, I will update....

Prospector looks pretty good each time I go past and close to town.

There is nothing to see on Hay Street any more, apparently

I rang the prospector twice today and it rung out" Weird" I will call back tomorrow.
That's were we are heading in a couple of weeks if we can get in.

As for Hay Street @crackacoldie :eek-53: I will confirm that there is nothing to see for you when passing :highly_amused:

I will also ring Discovery Parks tomorrow and hopefully I can get though them. Of to Google to have a look at there web site.

OMG @bigcol I didn't realise there was so much to do there after all. Much appreciate all the info on what to do in Kalgoorlie.
I am only going for 4 Days and it looks like we are going to be flat out trying to fit every thing in.

Also what is the Hanault? Don't tell me that's the old underground Tourist Mine.

List of thing to see and do>>

  1. Royal fling Doctor Museum
  2. Suss out the Gov Museum from 65 million years ago :biggrin-new:
  3. Ben Prior Park
  4. Hammond Park
  5. Find the look out near the water place/pool area I assume.

I am only going for 4 Days and it looks like we are going to be flat out trying to fit every thing in. - if your interested in old buildings, a slow drive down Burt St (Boulder) there are some great ones - also statues on street corners
there is no shopping centers like Karrinyup or Morley, more individual shops like Murry St Mall...
the place IS very spread out - hence why it is Kalgoorlie / Boulder now, used to be 2 seperate towns, right next door to each other.....

the Terrorist (Tourist) information place is quite nice, on the corner where Paddy Hannah's Statue is (well it was last time I was there...)

Also what is the Hanault? Don't tell me that's the old underground Tourist Mine. - Yeppers, the old Tourist mine, you could go underground and have a look at the Gold still in the walls - you just couldnt reach it - 10mt abyss inbetween you and it........ my Old Man used to be a guide there, and an Uncle used to Manage it.

List of thing to see and do>>

  1. Royal fling Doctor Museum - twice, I have tried, twice it has been closed (public hol once, and staff meeting another)
  2. Suss out the Gov Museum from 65 million years ago :biggrin-new:,my preference is for Locally run Museums - like the one in Esperance, it has more info about the local area, and it being developed, apart from the small bit about the Gold, and a display of the old Line Cutters "humpy", the old buildings out the back, and the sodding great A Frame..... you are pretty much at Perth Museum
  3. Ben Prior Park - only worth stopping to stretch your legs on the way to Kal - about 1-1.5 hours - you will have seen / drooled / wondered around by then, and be bored
  4. Hammond Park - nice picknic spot, they have a Castle there...........hahahaha - and ponds with ducks........ across the road is the cemetry, some old grave stones to look at
  5. Find the look out near the water place/pool area I assume. - not pool - from memory I think its the old Water Tanks for the town... nice views, but your on the North side of town, so you cannot see the Super pit from there.... about 3 other mines inbetween

I have been to Kal a few times over the years - my father was born there, and he used to work for WMC at Kambalda
I have an Aunty in Southern Cross as well........
now the Museum there (SX) is good.... all about the area.........nothing about geothermal inter reaction with tecktonic plates (and knives and forks) that happened 65 million years ago.....
I used to leave my place about 6.00am - but I live near the base of Greenmount and get to Kal about 3 or 4 pm if I didnt stop in SX or Coolgardie

good place to stop for Breakkie - Bakers Hill Bakery - just like Pinjarra Bakery, but east (hahahahahaha)
lunch would be Tammin Truck Stop - best Bacon & Cheese toasted sandwich I have ever had at a truck stop....... but you will be through there long before Lunch.

I have left out Northam, as thats @Capt. Gadget 's stomping ground, and he would know of the best places to see & Visit

Kelleberrin has a shop - with a couple of Humpies (FJ's) on display - its done up like a servo (last time I was there) inside a shop.
lots of cool cars seem to live in Kelleberrin, Holdens, Fords, the odd Valiant, worth a stop to stretch your legs and have a perv....

all in all a very nice day full of driving and sightseeing, just to GET to Kal.................

hahahahahaha

the Terrorist (Tourist) information place is quite nice, on the corner where Paddy Hannah's Statue is (well it was last time I was there...) Will have to pop in and have a look, I remember passing that statue years ago in my youth so I will be keen to get back and have another closer look.

That's a shame because I always wanted to go there. Oh well them the breaks hey.

List of thing to see and do>>

  1. Royal fling Doctor Museum - twice, I have tried, twice it has been closed (public hol once, and staff meeting another) Hopefully it's open when we get there and I will take some photos for you and post them up on a trip report.
  2. Mmmm I just had another look and its 624km from Butler so I am assuming around 7 hours travel not including stops of course traveling at say 95/100km. So saying that your saying it use to take you 9 to 10 hours with no stops. I think we will stop in at SX though.

good place to stop for Breakkie - Bakers Hill Bakery - just like Pinjarra Bakery, but east (hahahahahaha)
lunch would be Tammin Truck Stop - best Bacon & Cheese toasted sandwich I have ever had at a truck stop....... but you will be through there long before Lunch. Can't beat a good BBQ sandwich so Tammin truck stop here we come.

Will be stoping in Northam to catch up with my 93 year old Grandma. Only for a quick vist as we will be passing through. @Capt. Gadget we will be passing so I will be keeping an eye out for a flash looking Ranger.

lots of cool cars seem to live in Kelleberrin, Holdens, Fords, the odd Valiant, worth a stop to stretch your legs and have a perv.... Keep that one on the quite and have to stop in and have a look.

@bigcol Thanks for the time and effort for posting all of that info on Kalgoolie and the travels on the way and hopefully I can repay the favour sometime.

Cheers Paul
