Jayco Swift 3 way Thetford fridge. We have set up today and put the fridge to run on gas. The freezer is getting cold but the fridge isn’t working all. Can’t work it out, does anyone know what we are doing wrong? We don’t have a powered site. Should we run it on battery?

If you have just started with a hot fridge it will take many hours for the whole thing to cool down, the usual thing is to run the fridge for a day on 240 before heading off, this gets the whole cabinet chilled down...starting from scratch will take awhile, gas is as good as 240, 12v is a No.

The cooling "fluid" goes through the freezer first and then through the fins in the fridge. The fridge won't really kick in until the freezer has first cooled down. This is regardless of whether you run it on gas, 240V, or 12V. It will cost you about an hour of fridge cooling every time you open the door to check if it is getting colder since you are filling the fridge with warm air each time. If the fridge was first started at the beginning of the day, you won't get much cooling until the temperature drops overnight. You should expect it to be working ok by the next morning.

cheers

Everything that @mikerezny said is absolutely correct. It will take time. When the fridge has chilled and all the contents are cooled too, it will be fine. One important thing is to make sure the van and fridge is level. Fridge must be within 3 degrees from vertical across the van (wheel to wheel) and less than 6 degrees from front to back as looking at the front of fridge (horizontally from draw bar to rear). Outside these limits will not only hamper operation but will cause damage to unit cooling in the long run. If you can get the level bubble within the lines BOTH ways, you are okay. The only other thing is to try to put shade on side of van where fridge is. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
