We were warned the same thing. Also told that the smell goes through the van during storage times.
Hi,
we camped next to a family just lately. They had this great steel box on the back of the van. The lid lifted up and a largish Weber slid out (it would have been a Baby Q, but he already had this Weber foe home use). His point was that when he had a slideout, the cooking smell went through the van. But also, before he built this box, when he put the Weber in the back of his Cruiser, the smell went through the car and the family hated it.

regards
Mike

The bbq does have a timber enclosure build around it when done by the factory if I remember correctly.

Thanks for everyone's input, I've got plenty of options to think about.

We have a Sizzler Delux high lid. Great BBQ didn't buy it from jayco. We got it because it fits in our front boot.

Hi Tone,

You say it fits in the front boot of your van, does it leave plenty of room for other stuff and do you use on the fold down picnic table on the side of the 'van? If so, does it fit okay?

Yes fits in front boot of our 17.56. Plenty of room for other stuff from other side. I don't use the side table for BBQ I made up a stand for it.

BBQ unclips and stand packs up under van in under 30sec.

We have a Sizzler high lid replaced a Q200 I prefer BBQ with lid open. Also glass window works when cooking close.
You can take out the plate and get the wire mesh cooking rack and cook on it with frypan etc like a normal stove which is a plus

We put a baking dish on it which fits does a nice roast.

Got ours cheaper unopened unwanted prize was going to put it on a slide although end up next to the annex which I did not want so brought the stand they sell for it.

Should of done what @Tone did :)
We have the larger hatch on the 22.68 fits great in there.

do not mind the non stick plate although stainless steel be nicer.

We also got the thing to stick on the front as unlike the Q200 no storage for anything.
Been happy with it family of 6 so sometimes I like more space :)

I certainly wouldn't use it on the fold down table.

It's likely to be too high for a start, too small probably and too close to the van wall...you'd be cleaning the wall all the time....and the smoke would enter the van....

It seems you'd be better off with something easily moved around but whatever way you go the use of the bayonet on the van makes shorter stops far easier....how often do you tuck your heaviesh bbbq under your arm and head to the beach? It's nice to have the option but unless most of your camping is at places you know has easy beach access, it could be a rare event.

The 3metre hose ..whether Weber or something else...gives you enough length to move the bbq around far enough away from the van so smoke, smell etc is no issue.

We use a small table ...like a mini ironing board...bought from Freddie's for about $29....bbq fits easily, light to move, height adjustable, and easily stored with tables chairs etc.

With the baby q if you want a good cheap solid plate get the Aldi teppanyaki plate when it's on sale. $10 trim the handles and it fits perfect. I know there was a member here Andrew somebody who went from weber to sizzler and gave it a huge wrap. The idea of the slide out for convienence would be gold imo. we roast heaps in ours i would be definetly be concerned about the cooking grease having had an issue at home with our spanline awning.

@Tone that stand is gold mate. I have drawn up something to mount ours of the bumper but yet to build it.

While we were living in Big Mal for some 160 days I looked at the option of putting a hatchway into the boot with a slide for the weber, but decided against it as it is just so easy to pick weber up and throw it in the ute for picnics, on it's weber trolly I can move it around and keep it away from the side of the van which has a couple of marks on it from splashes from the old barbie..............................$800 is a lot of money and stuck next to the van you can still stink it out.

@Tone , that is very cool.................

This may help.....

We've had a slide out made with easy access to the Weber. (It was annoying us getting it out before dropping the beds so wanted something we could get to easily)

It slides, has clips to make it easily removed or can be used as is. The hose goes to the second gas bottle easily as the gas bayonet is used by the pull out kitchen.
When used on the slide out, we'll protect the side of the van and the canvas with a car heat deflector. When that gets too much to clean we'll replace it.

Bbq can also be taken out, put on the little table we carry and used away from the van itself. We always use the Weber...and wore out the previous one, hence the new one which the dealer supplied and is part of the payload allowance.

Nice set ups there Dobbie and Tone.
After all the great input from everyone, im seriously considering the sizzler deluxe high lid and have it in the front boot. Only downfall will be I'll have to pull it out and set it up rather than having it on a slide out as I will be limited on room if I go with the 16ft Journey. Having a good hot plate on a BBQ is what I need and as the sizzler high lid doubles as an oven then that takes care of having the Smev oven installed inside and I won't loose on cupboard space either. Plus weight is another thing to consider on a single axle too.

We also use our sissler as a stove boiling water for spaghetti or the like. And love the glass lid so keep an eye on pudding so don't have to open and loose all the heat and having a sunk cake
