never, while I'm still breathing at any rate

I had friends years ago who used to hire out campers and trailers (Mum & Dad outfit) lucky they also owned a camping store, to replace breakages and "lost" items

they still have the camping store, but I dont think they hire out to those not already on their list.

cheers

No couldn't do it with mine. However, if i purchased a van for a the pure sake of hiring it out (certainly no mods done to that van) than i could. If you hired it out for 1/4 to 1/2 a year, you would have payback in less then 2yrs. Average van hire life time before selling would be 4 - 5 years. Which means 2 - 3 yrs of pure profit and all this before even selling the van at the end.
Tidy profit point really.

Not on your life - not even family is being lent our pride & joy!

Only a few things to worry about...
  • Cost of new insurance policy as you are now commercially hiring it;
  • The tow vehicle they roll up with;
  • How are they going to load the van & how much;
  • Do they have a decent electric brake system;
  • Does their car have suitable wiring;
  • WDH or suspension airbags;
  • Mirrors;
  • Detailed instructions - that they don't/won't read until after they stuff it up!
  • Dents, scratchers, chips...

I'm sure the Insurance company would love you if you had to make a claim. Using it for business (hiring) is a whole different kettle of fish as far as they are concerned.

yes they would. CIL offer insurance whereby you ring them up when you want to switch over to HIRE mode and they change your level of cover and premium accordingly for that time frame.

Having said all that, for the last couple of years I have lent the van to my sister for a weekend once a year, but I tow it to where they are staying and set it up and then return a couple of days later to pack it up and take t home
Luckily it's only 30 mins from my place...lol.

Back in 2010 when did our big trip we met up with close friends who had hired a Jayco Discovery for a trip up the centre at Yulara resort. Took him a few days to get comfortable towing and setting it up.
We caught up with them after we had all returned and he tells me that on their last day traveling home they pulled into their driveway and the door was missing!!!.....I kid you not.... Lol
They don't know how or where it came off but had to pay the hire company for a replacement.

Clearly when they built the van they used some of those really short screws on the door assembly - the same ones that they use to hold all the other stuff in and on the van together (for a short time)
