No Worries at all, I hope the kids have as much fun there as mine do (Site 18 is a good one, right on a corner so plenty of space for parking etc, it is close to the ammenities, Laundry and the pool/slide - but not so close that it is noisy). :)

We have stayed at the Adventure Whitsunday Big 4 in Airlie a few times now and we are currently looking forward to our 15 nights there coming up after christmas. Can't wait, the kids absolutely love it as well - there is so much for them to do. Your trip sounds awesome, hope you all have a great time and travel safe.

We are towing the Van to Cairns in September next year so we'll probably drive past you somewhere!

Have a good one, Andrew.

We will also be heading to Cairns next September for school holidays, looks like they will have to rename the Bruce hwy - Expanda Highway!

Have you decided where you are staying?

Sorry, we have been away and busy etc.

We have booked the "Super Ensuite Site" at the Cairns Coconut Resort. We stayed there last time we went up in 2011 and it was awesome. This site has full concrete driveway and slab, an Ensuite with a Shower, Toilet, Spa bath, twin basin vainity, washing machine, dryer and 4 burner BBQ. Not to mention all the activities for the kids! We head off on the first Saturday of the Holidays, can't wait.

Have made a couple of additions to the Prado. After towing to Airlie Beach at Christmas, I came to the conclusion that the suspension needed some work and that I missed the UHF badly. So while I was at it, I did a couple of other additions as well...........

Here is what is used to look like:

And Now.....

I'm not sure how much better the new suspension is for towing yet as the Hayman Reese Shank for the WDH Adjustable Ball mount is now a bit short. I am undecided whether to buy the longer Shank or get a Hitch Spacer Block to lift the height of the coupling. All part of the fun I guess.

We are leaving Saturday to arrive on Monday, we looked at getting the super ensuite but it was already taken :p

We had to book the Super Ensuite when we left to come home in September 2011 just to get it. Where are you staying on the way up? We are staying at the Adventure Whitsunday Big 4 in Airlie Beach Again. Love that park, we stop there whenever we can.

For the uninitatied on all things "far" north is there any special reason for September?

I am going up in July to Cairns Coconut and Airlie Beach big 4 so fingers crossed I got the seasons right :)!

Hey expanda! We go in September for no other reason than the fact that it is school holidays and I have 2 kids. Having said that, I have a mate who lives in Cairns and he reckons the weather in September is generally perfect. Not too hot, generally not too wet and normally light winds so we can go fishing out wide. I did a 4x4 trip to Cape York last year, I left mid June and came back mid July. This is the best time of the year right up there, anything north of Cooktown is still well over 30 degrees through the day, although remaining pleasant at night for camping. This is also the dry season so "generally" all the tracks are open and your holiday is not spoiled by days of driving rain. I think anything July to October in Cairns would be great.

Going from Rocky to Cairns in July, it is still a bit cold for me in the swimming pools - even in September I was reluctant to get in up at Cairns and Airlie was too cold. Having said that, the kids swam everywhere and loved it. Depends what you are used to I suppose.

You will also love both Big 4 Parks. The first time we went, we arrived at the Adventure Whitsunday Airlie Beach and did not want to leave. The kids had a ball and it was just a really well laid out awesome park. Then we got to Cairns and thought, this is even better! Cairns Coconut is bigger, it has a "restaurant", a convenience Shop and 2 x Fuel pumps. The kids loved the adventure water park, but personally I reckon the 30m pool and slides in Airlie was a better set up. Either way, both parks are way above average and you will have a ball. If it is available, I can also recommend the Super Ensuite Site in Cairns. If for nothing else, having your own private Washing Machine and Clothes Dryer made the difference for us.

See ya!

You will love Paronella Park, even my kids say that out of everything we did last trip, this was the highlight. We were there in September 2011, we drove the 90k down from Cairns and I planned to be there a couple of hours and then make the short drive to Mission Beach to visit relatives, before returning to Cairns. We ended up staying all day and never got to Mission, it really was a special place where you can almost feel the history. We did not stay in the adjacent van park, however I would have loved to as I have heard that as good as the day tours are, the night time tours are apparently better! Not sure at this stage, but we may leave Cairns early this time and spend one night there on the way home.
