I ordered two gas bayonets on my Expanda, one at the front and one at the rear.

I did not realise that Jayco installs a house gas bayonet fitting on the caravan I just presumed it would be like a normal gas bottle fitting. ;)

So this is what came with the van....

gp1013.jpg

Obviously attaching my Coleman Roadtrip BBQ with its standard hose was just not going to work!

After a bit of investigation I found that you need to get a 3/8 fitting on one end and a house gas bayonet connect on the other end. This is easy to find in most BBQ shops even Bunnings I believe.

However the Coleman Roadtrip does not have a 3/8 fitting it is an american style fitting with no adaptor.

So for anyone like me who plans on using the coleman it really means you need to get another BBQ with a standard fitting on it.

I ended up buying the weber Q 220, I am very happy with the unit and once I got over the initial cost factor was very please with its cooking abilities!

Just came back from a huge trip and took the weber q with me.

Its an amazing BBQ made the perfect roast beef, chicken and cooked seafood like a breeze.

I highly recommend the weber q and if you can grab the 220 as it has a slightly higher lid and temp gauge to regulate cooking.

Happy cooking!

We have ordered a 17.56-2 expanda. Went for the drop down jacks, 100 amp batt, awning with annex walls, 150ltr fridge, black privacy screens, heron aircon and a front mounted gas bayonet. Didn't realise you could have them at both ends - is this a good thing?

Currently own an Eagle Camper which is great, but kids now out growing it - teenagers; 1 of each!

Expected delivery late Nov Early Dec - can't wait!

I too have 2 gas points on our Expanda.

But I made a mistake only ordering 1 because when its windy with the BBQ, I have to move to the back of the van too keep the BBQ burning so therefore I had to add one at the back of the van as well.

So if I had my time again I would order 1 at the front of the van and the other at the back of the van.

Spoke to dealer and we can and will add extra fitting to the rear.

Might be a silly question, but can both gas bayonets be used at the same time?

Apologies in advance if this is a silly question that I should already know.

We are soon to purchase a Weber BabyQ (Q100e) to use with the van (and the gas bayonet we have fitted on the outside of our van) and I notice there is a Weber 3m LP Gas Bayonet hose listed in the accessories area on the Weber site (http://www.weberbbq.com.au/AccessoryDetails.php?id=95) and I wondered if this means it will connect the WeberQ straight up to our bayonet connection on the van without any other couplings/etc. (being that the bayonet fittings Jayco use are household fittings) ?

I have also read that the regulator used on the front of the van (near the gass bottles) is the only regulator needed for a Weber Q (which I hope is correct) so I wondered if anyone else out there is hooking their Weber Q up the same way?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi, I have just had delivered my new 2012 Expanda (previously owned a 2010 model). I am interested in this thread as I have a similar issue with the bayonet i had fitted. I had it fitted because I thought it would save lugging an extra gas bottle which we use for out 10 year old coleman. I was told that we cant use the coleman on this connection as it doesn't have a regulator and the flames would shoot metres into the air. Can anyone shed any light on if there is an attachment which would allow me to still use the coleman on the bayonet fitting. OR if you can use pots on top of the webber Q to boil water for cooking pastas and the sorts...

The regulator at the front of the van is all you need.
Take a look closely at the pic expanda has posted in this thread. Note the type of connector attached to the hose. That is what you need to make sure your hose has on one end.

Hey another handy hint for gas bayonets, I found that the housing of the plug end of an extension chord fits perfectly over the end of the gas bayonet attached to the van. It is perfect to keep the dust and dirt out of your gas connections whilst driving down the road.

If your coleman is unregulated like lots of two burners are then you cannot use it on a bayonet. Bayonet gas supply comes from a regulated supply (2.75 kPa) whereas your one probably uses bottle pressure (very high) something like 700 kpa plus. Its jets will be tiny so if you did hook it up to a regulated supply, it just would not work.
Maybe keep a little gas bottle for your coleman and just use the weber for bbqing or buy a single burner cooktop that you can hook a bayonet/hose to.

I’m another who has a coleman stove. They all do use regulated gas, but have a proprietary connector so we MUST use their hoses, and thus their regulator. Theoretically, you could hook it to the van gas supply, if there was a connector you could use. I also tried my local GoGas/Elgas people who make custom hoses and stuff, and even they wouldn’t/couldn't touch it……

(I’ve now gone back to a simple three burner stove since the Coleman regulator leaks so badly the gas escaping from it could be lit. I emailed their customer service to advise it had a very bad leak and asked if it was common or a potential design flaw, and they responded with “well, buy a new one from a dealer”. So I ordered a new regulator through Rays with an expected wait time of 2 weeks max, but cancelled the order when it still hadn’t turned up after 4 months – like every other order Rays had with Colemans. Not on my 'thumbs up' list :))

Hey Guys,

Just a note on the Webber Q's. We got the the Baby Q 100EUA which comes with a slightly taller hood and also a thermometer. They do the 3 models (100, 200 and 300) as a variant for only $10 more (only available from webber specialists) that come with the higher hood and thermometer. I can highly recommend the special model. :) Our 100EUA will actually cook quite a good size roast. Large enough for 4 adults at least.

@macca ....just found this thread. I'm feeling a little frustrated If I get this right - the gas bayonet installed on the caravan can't be used with a Coleman? I got the coleman as it seemed more versatile. I got it with griddle so I could still do the usual and still could use pots and so on.
I just purchased a Coleman eventemp 3 burner thinking it would work of I get the hose with the bayonet connection. Perhaps it still could?

I've seen on ebay bayonet with 3/8 bsp female. The coleman has a hose connector with a 3/8 bsp female to connect to a standard 4kg bottle with a 3/8 male. My very limited knowledge of plumbing....can you use a 3/8 bsp male to 3/8 bsp male connector?

Or am better off returning the Coleman?

Ok...looks like coleman i got also uses high pressure as well.... So will not work with caravans regulator and bayonet. Bayonet is only rated low pressure and van is required by law to be low pressure. Coleman has regulator as well...therefore does not work.

Hope this helps someone else.
