Hi guys, I just received a quote to get one gas bayonet fitting fitted to the expanda. Quote was 450, seems very excessive to me considering the fridge gas line is right next to where I want fitting put. What do others think. Thanks

Was this by Jayco ? I would ring a local gas plumber and see what they quote you as they should be able to do it I would think

The factory do it for $103 at manufacture. Additional ones are $90.

Post manufacture will be more expensive due higher labour costs (Jayco presumably pay much less than a "one off" as they do so much gas plumbing) and the need for a new gas certificate.

I'd be looking for a second quote. Yes it costs more as an after-fit and needs the certificate as mentioned, but $450 seems a bit too high.....

However....
even though the fridge gas line is already there, does the line need upgrading to a larger diameter when an additional fitting is installed? This would add a significant cost.

Just to revive an old thread....

My dealer has quoted $150 for an extra bayonet (dealer fitted), he says this is cost price.

Hi Relgate,

We have not ordered a bayonet at all on our van.
My thoughts were that I did not really want to cook that close to my van wall or canvas, as fat / smoke stains etc concerned me. I have a Weber Q 120 (I think) and simply carry a 2.5Kg gas bottle and a fold up table. That way I can set the BBQ up away from the van a little. Also found that lots of others (family etc) like to use my BBQ once set up and would prefer them not cooking in our immediate space. We have used the BBQ for around 4 weeks of hollidays and are still yet to use one full 2.5Kg bottle of gas, cooking roasts etc as well.
In my opinion, forget it all together. I plan to add a gas ring to the "A" frame to suit the smaller bottle and will make sure it attaches and detaches easily.
Would like to no your thoughts on this, and weather you only use them for BBQ's etc.

On my Swan I had two bayonets one up the front and one down the back. The rear one was for the gas for the shower or the bbq and the front one was the bbq.

I have the longest hose that you can legally buy and this keeps it well and truly away from the side of the van so I don't see any dramas with it. I sometimes carry and extra gas bottle but the less you have to carry the better IMO.

One question as I am confused by all this....

Can anyone with a quote confirm this point -

1) Does the quote cover re certification of your gas supply system????????

Once the gas system is modified from factory your gas cert from the factory is no longer valid.
If it doesn't include a re cert then I wouldn't go near it and if insurance finds out when something goes wrong you may get a nasty shock!

I would hazard a guess the first post in the thread stating $450 would provide a re certification for that price so in theory is expensive but overall is probably correct.

I think having a bayonet or carrying a bottle is really a personal choice as you have outlined. :)

Personally for me I prefer to just be able to plug the BBQ in and go, no stuffing around getting the bottle out and connecting just plug and play.

Makes it easier on the wife to as she can connect / disconnect without issue.

For the $100 or so dollars at order time it has served us very well on two vans and will be on the third 10000%.

You have alot of reasons to not plug and play and the only thing I could say against it is that it is one extra thing to carry and maintain.

I fitted one to my Swan outback on my own and it cost around $50 total for the bit needed - T-Piece, bit of copper pipe, bit of black plastic pipe to go over the copper pipe and the Bayonette - 3m hose for the BBQ is another $30+ on top of that.

So wouldnt pay anything over $250 and that would be stretching it - Its only a 45min job if that.

250 sounds like what it should be to include re certifying.....

When I had my dilema I was qouted around $200 to receritfy and about 100 - 150 for the work depending on where Jayco put the one I was getting.

It depends what state you are in. The original certificate is from Victoria because Jayco are in Vic'. The original certificate covers the plumbing and gas work in the van for 6 years. Any additional gas installation work (ie new bayonet) will require a new certificate. This does not replace the original as the new certificate only covers the new work however the gas installation will need to be pressure sound as the bayonet will require teeing into existing gas line.
Any plumbing work with a total value over $750 also needs to be certified. So if you buy a couple tanks $200, fittings $50, pressure pump and associated materials $250 and labour because you have to be a plumber to do the work $300. This would also need to be certified. My point being its not just gas that needs to be certified. But the rules chenge state by state. This is the Victorian example. $450 seems a bit rich for an extra bayonet. Its not that big a job.

A good point about the proximity to the van. I plan to get a maximum length hose and cook away from the van. I know what you mean about others using the BBQ. Perhaps you need to put out more of an angry "Touch my BBQ and you die" vibe. Works for me!
For me I like to convenience of not needing another gas bottle to worry about and fill etc. Also like the idea that the 2 factory bottles are already there and stored. All i have to do is hook up! Re-filling/management is easier too because I will just use one bottle till empty, switch to the 2nd and re-fill the first. Essentially there is always a spare.
Yes, all I will use it for is BBQ

They are all great points relgate. I will practice my angry between now and the next trip..... The main thing I guess is as you stated, filling a the small gas bottle. Do you wait till its empty or do you fill it with a third to go just so you don't run out. Do you have any idea how long the maximum length of hose is? Also, I signed off on our van last week, so I guess it would be too late to add in now?

The parts for a bayonet fittin shouldn't be over $100. I did this last year on my 16.49OB, but dont remember exactly the cost. Also added a tap just under the van as a safety thing. In Qld. it depends who does the gas certificate. Last one I got was $85 but I hear they can be up to $145.

Just before we went to Moreton Is for a week I bought a Weber Baby Q against the advice of she who must be obeyed, plus a 3mtr braided hose which is I think the longest you can purchase. Made a convert out of her, cooking streak, chops, muffins and a cake. Our son who also said I was mad, took it away with the van this weekend, and has come back raving about how good it is.

The fitting has a rubber dust cap to keep dust and sand out, and it's a simple matter to turn on the gas tap after plugging in the bayonet fitting. Voila, all set to go. I love it although I must admit I use the lovely clean free BBQs in caravan parks up here.
