Home now after taking over 8 hours to travel 256kms through the flooded areas.
We listened to the emergency stuff on the radio while driving and looked at some of the flooded areas from the highway.
There's still a hell of a lot of water around and it's possible to see some of the flood levels ....huge. The rivers and creeks are all fast flowing and dirty brown with lots of debris...but the major pacific highway seems to be ok now (if you ignore the potholes)
Anyone travelling through should be ok now but many of the minor roads including the Bruxner are still closed. I certainly would balk at Waterfall Way west of Coffs at the moment.....I hear it's just one big waterfall and series of mud and land slides.
I really commend the emergency services for what they've already done and what they'll be doing for some time and hear there's a group formed ...I think it's called 'Lismore helping hands' who are getting some real help to those affected. Good on em.
If I hadn't really needed to get home I'd be there volunteering....there are so many in need.
Speaking of which....it strikes me as strange that those without insurance are eligible for emergency funding and those with insurance are not. Maybe I've missed something but I hear even those in some areas who were insured are being refused by both the insurance companies and the government. I'm certainly not sure if the details but, if correct, it seems woefully unfair.
The other strong message is the effect rubber neckers are having on those with damage. They're causing more water damage, even dust damage just because they want to take a photo.....not help but take a photo!
It must be GOF time again!
and the rest of the floodwater has yet to reach areas downstream.....Rocky for example.
Poor Devils.
