When you're out in towns/cities and the kids are being good and they want a treat, I go into Coles/Woolies/IGA etc and buy a pack of 6 ice creams for about $6, rather than buying from the convenience stores at $3 each!, We also have a small esky and make ham + salad sandwich/wraps most days when we're out. If I go to café with the family for lunch we normally eat less and still pay $50+ compared to healthy cheap wraps for probably $10. But you have to eat out sometimes, so enjoy it when you do.

I reckon a common thread is turning up here... beware of the "death by 1000 cuts" kind of mentality. A meal out might only be $50-80 but if you do it once a week, in 3 months that's $1000 for 12 meals... $5 a wash in a washing machine can add up quickly... We do 10 loads a week through our 9kg washer... That's $50 a week... 12 weeks that's another $600...

Plenty of good info here. We have a $1200 a week budget on our 9month trip. We're not missing much, mainly not eating out any more than once a fortnight.

Other big saver that may have been mentioned is ........... don't take kids...o_O

I like this, with s family of 5, there will be one left over. Surely it's only fair the driver gets it, right?:D

Wonder if this will help a few????? FREE eBook – How to slash the cost of your Big Lap around Australia
Haven't seen the content as I've just requested the download and the email hasn't come in yet (Takes 10 minutes)!!
"22 Top Tips to Slash the Cost of your Big Lap"
Ive ordered that guys videos ... The commercially produced stuff is good but tainted in favour of the sponsors etc, and a quality video from Mr Avg and his family doing what we want to do sounds like it would be worth a look

We are 5 days into our 4 months away, currently sitting at Ayers Rock camp ground. For our budget I allowed $1000 per week, $16k ish for our trip. When working out figures, I worked on using 20ltrs p/100 and paying $2 per ltr.
We had a not so good run with the Pajero using 20-21ltr p/100 on the trip from Waikerie(awesome free camp spot on the river) to Coober Pedy. Was pushing against a head wind which didn't help.
Didn't feel that bad when people next to use used about the same. We are not tight, but don't want to spend to much money on going out to dinner etc, rather spend it seeing things or doing something special.

Cheers

Sorry having issues with my phone.
All I can suggest is to allow extra for fuel as this will probably be the main part of your expenses. With our 20ft van behind the Pajero we would get between 18-20ltr p/100
We had a great run yesterday where we got 16.2ltrs p/100 towing our new van. Maybe allow an extra 3-4 ltrs p/100 for just in case. I also had a long range auxiliary tank fitted late last year in preparation for the trip and it have already paid for itself twice, as some of the servos shown in the camps book were not open on the Monday of the queens b'day weekend.

cheers

Yep I have a jerry of diesel for just in case it will give me 180kms and if I go past Isa I pack 2 tins.....with some places only having one fuel point, they may have run out or pump breakdown.
Mrs D says we are doing the 1K per week budget roughly and thats doesn't include the sapphire's she aquired.
