Measure it first. Many expandas have different size mattress'. As an example a 16 rear mattress can be quite a bit larger than some 18 rears. Front and rears are often different. Our 18 rear is smaller than our old 16 rear by quite a lot. Jayco probably got rid of the stupid 3 inch end piece mattress, it was pointless. You would be surprised how many different sizes there are. Hopefully jayco will sort it for you.

Has anyone leveled the bed vase themselves and put a new mattress in with the join in the centre?

Yes it has been done by quite a few, I think Lara did it and I remember seeing a nice one recently. I will look for the link.
