Just doing a bit of reading and found this out, thought it was interesting...

If you have "Do not Overtake Turning Vehicle" signs on the back of your van you can legally take up two lanes when doing a U-Turn or even normal turning...Other vehicles need to give way...

Me for one, previously didn't know why they had a need on a caravan.

Anyone have them? Does it stop people who dont know the road rules from honking and telling you you're a naughty boy? Anyone been booked by police for using two lanes for a U'ey?

Pretty Ugly on the back of the van....but seems useful...

Something I have thought about fitting in the past, as all up I'm nearly 12m long.

Prompted me to have another look at the rules, and yes it is something that I'll probably fit now reminded

You don't need those big ugly ones , they are for trucks buses etc, there is smaller rectangular one a bit smaller than a number plate.
My mate just fitted one to his van, should do the same on mine.
Can pick them up from good van accessory stores or truck supply stores

I have a small one as @Bushman noted (wording only) screwed to the driver side of the van. Thats all you need. Some have suggested they are a bit wanky for a caravanner but perfectly acceptable for any vehicle combination over 7.5m and makes you legal for those wide turns. Wide turns without the signage is illegal.

I am the same. It does seem a little wanky but if it keeps me legal when I take a wider path in a tight left turn then why not

Now folks before you go slapping on the signs make sure you read the regs properly, vans really only need the APPROVED sign with the writing, the thing most people do wrong which can attract a ticket is place them in the wrong position. Drivers side is incorrect.
The sign with the writing be it plain yellow, stripey job or rectangular red/yellow must be approved with the approval stamped on it, these must be positioned on the left (passenger side) of the vehicle and within a certain area, if you stick them outside this area, like many seem to do, other than you can be fined it may also render you liable if in an accident.
So read the regs and use a tape measure and while your at it check tail light and number plate position, the plate needs a 40 odd deg visibility.

Having run over 2 vehicles who ignored the signs I can assure you I'm up to speed, both times I was lucky with witnesses, mates have been done at other times as the signs don't give you full immunity...I have found to stop the fools you swing the prime mover across the line while leaving most of the trailer blocking the other lane to keep the idiots at bay......

Sounds about the right spot, the approval bit I think while making sure the size is correct it's also for the type of reflective material and sign needs to be stamped but like many of the regs some states have a twist........vehicle length plays a part on how many, type and location, hell you can spend days going thru the legislation for transport stuff but on vans I don't think it's mandated, may be, but I'm not going to troll thru all my info to find out.
With the stuff people have on the back of their vans and the positions of lights, number plates etc someone could have a field day with a tape measure as many don't comply.

This is where ya gotta luv the gov't. I jumped in, mortgaged the house and bought a $7 plate that doesn't technically apply. It doesn't have any of the below detail on it (technically not all of it is required in all states from what I can find but some manufacturers put it all on anyway just in case).

Manufacturer name or agent AS4001.2 CLASS 1 31L

I can't technically find any reason why I can't write those details on with an indelible marker, or stamp it on myself.

Anyone seen the Australian Standard?....No doubt the relevant legislation refers to the AS and doesn't have any details.

My B eyetch......is about how hard it is to find information in Australian Standards (copywrite) that is referred to in the law.....Its like you broke the rules, but unless you pay us we are not going to tell you what the rules are.....:ballchain:

had it on the passenger side.....got told to move it to the drivers side....
ah well...its only tek screws

Probably half right !!!!!!!! depends on which sign is used anyway you have to refer to the Road Transport Act, Fed or State god what a minefield...easier in a van to just not use the damn things, they will not save you from breach if things go pear shaped anyway because it depends on who reads the BS, in what state in happens and believe me what is okay in your state may not be okay elsewhere.......................trucks have them because they must, most times...... the ADR's mean nothing it's what in the Road Transport Act that matters and if you want to dig into that headache go for it, myself leave the damn things off........

Drovers End, walk away.

Easy solution......don't turn ...at all, at all.

:beaten:

Why can't someone who's supposedly in authority publish a clear directive?

....van over x in length is classified, with tow vehicle, as over the z limit ....so needs a sign which must be placed ? distance from the ground and on the ?.. hand side of the van. This entitles you to use two lanes when turning rather than one and all other motorists will be informed.

Below x in length, those towing must use only one lane.

:flypig:

They're so ambivalent that those directly affected, even though they try to comply, can be culpable.

No logic to it all!

They form a group to pick a committee to investigate, then sit on their backsides till an answer is needed....so refer it on to another body. God help us!

I have a small one stuck on the passenger side of the van, as turning left is the most likely time I will straddle lanes. Without the sign it is against the law to straddle.
