so @The Goodwins , I presume your movies are on the hard drive (what format are they, looks like some are avi?) What are you using the apple tv for? Music or games off the phone?

My tech for the van is; We have a spare Telstra Tbox (cheap as chips now), anyway I keep an eye out for family movies on tv, normally sat/sun is best. I keep it updated on a regular basis and when we go away I take it out of the family room and hook it up to the tv in the van. Only problem is you have to skip ads but the kids love watching the same movies over and over! It is only 200 gig, but that's more than plenty for a trip because I don't want them watching TV all the time.

@The Goodwins not very techno here! Just bought a 2TB drive from AUST Post, son is downloading movies from the net as I type, then he is going to burn our DVDs onto it. We always take a laptop with us as the kids use them and we will watch movies on the laptop with external speakers, or may use HDMI cable and plug into the TV. IPads go with us also as we use for navigation in car and accessing the internet as can't read Smart Phone, screen is too small for ageing eyes. Also love my kindle, will not travel without it, loved it so much bought another one for hubby, no need to carry books.

We have a Buffalo 500gb wifi hard drive which you can stream movies to iPad's we use it in the car for long trips and will go into the van. Then plug it into the TV to watch as well.
Also as we already had a airplay iHome speaker we did not go for the stereo in the caravan

Telstra just gives them away now, guess it's a way to keep you moving away, I have a spare one in the cupboard still in its box, so now I have a use for it, thanks for the idea

Got to love the technology. I know we go to get away from it but I also have a van to make life comfortable and we almost never make it to a fancy apartment. So....
Two TV/DVD combos mounter either end of the van.
Topfield PVR with hard drive which I load up with shows to watch while away.
A portable DVD player.
Multiple iPhones and IPads.
iPod compatible stereo.
And a new external tv mount put on today so we can move one of the screens outside!
Cheers
Andrew

There are some good ideas on here. I like the sound of the wifi hard drives. Only problem is getting the movies on the hard drive.

Wifi hard drives. The one we have you need to convert to mp4 does not worry me I have a program queue them up and dump them on.
In the car bigger kids have headphones and can just select what they want twins have ipad with sound and we listen and setup. Had a fireman sam marathon the other week. Better them wiggles :)

@davemc , what program do you use. I have tried programs before but never had much luck, main problem being the sound doesn't sync to what we are watching.

The Buffalo comes with its own program. Which can be a bit flakey. Also has a inbuilt rechargeable battery we used it to subdue the older kids when we finalised the buying of the Starcraft. I got mine from a place closing down for $70 which I thought be worth a try.
All the kids iPads are in Otterboxes so we use a Otterbox Latch to hold them in place on headrests.
We thought of getting a DVD player for the car although with different ages be hard to keep them all happy.
Yes we have three iPads for the kids :) I won one in a comp and 2 hand me downs.

You could always teach the kids to pay patience, 21, snap, fish, 31. Oh these are card games just in case you don't know
We always take ahard drive full of TV shows & movies, but rarely watch them

We swore no tv whilst camping then new van already had tv but never used it in 6 months til this new year

Didn't really take many movies but went op shop shopping (love some of the old gear in rural towns) and grabbed some old kids dvds for 50 cents, went down a treat for something different...tho I wasn't allowed to buy for $1 the Ralph mag free DVD they had, with girls Slo mo trampoline cam ..I can only wonder what that was all about.. B-) :) :-D

So now our Easter school holidays we've got the wd live already to go...still have cupboard full of brain games' scrabble and cards, just will mix it up for two weeks
