Hi Folks,
Having tried my hand at a cheap, then a medium priced dash cam, and both failed due to being.... well... Umm ... turned on.
I am investigating better ways to do what I need.
The needs have grown, and these are now to incorporate a camera on the back of the van, a rear cam on the tug with a permanent display on the dash via a 7" screen.
The center windscreen mirror will be removed, and a 7" monitor will be on the dash. My vision improves a lot by doing this, I am sick of ducking below the stupid mirror.
I have this on the way and will be fitted (I hope) before next weekends trip away.

The above link is a stand alone system and the monitor powers up the 2 x cameras, if the reverse signal is not connected I can swap between the 2 as I please.
I have a reverse camera already, this is down very low showing the tow ball, as i am connecting trailers a lot, this is a part of the double din stereo.

My question in this post is to ask if anyone has had experience with these types of units for the purpose of event cam reocding with GPS etc.
Here is an example that I think will suit my needs and be easily married to the above system I will be installing.

The price of $359 is a long way below $950 the local commercial installers are quoting for a similar product to do the same thing, supply only. The above example requires a HDD to be added as well.

These sorts of products are on evilbay starting from about $165, and even includes the cameras.

My goal is to have the 7"monito showing either.
Rear of the Tug
Rear of the Van
or
Rear of the blokey trailer (work)
And all is recorded, including a nice discrete forward dash camera.

I have had 3 rear enders, none our fault. This is why I am going to this trouble.
So
Has anyone gone down the path of a DVR system?

Just bought a 2nd hand 16.49 Panda with this system fitted. I did not get the display in the sale but bought a display that fits over the rear view mirror and it works like a charm. The camera is powered through the 12v connection on the rear of the fridge and it starts up when the ignition is on. Did not want an extra display on the dashboard as the GPS is 7 inches and the vehicles entertainment system is large. Looks like a 747 cockpit but plenty of windscreen to see the fools on the road.

While my dash cam just looks out the front my rear cams are seperate I can say that if you are going to record all feeds then seperate units would be the order of the day, 32Gb card in mine is just enough. If you use bumpy roads then set the knock record to mild or you will fill your card up in no time.
Big display is the way to go, if you want to go for one that replaces the mirror then get one that doesn't hang on the mirror they can be a big pain, once again on bumpy roads..........

My rear display can switch between rear of ute and rear of van with a button push....I use 90 deg cams as the 120 deg cams are useless......

Don't get a Navi8tor, pain to use.

I'm not getting a mirror replacement, the mirror will be gone so i can see out the front, but am getting this to sit down low on the dash, it will be out of my way, beside the HN7

The DVR can have a terra bite of storage on the HDD, plus SD cards in some, they come with rubber mounts for smooth installation. Nothing to stop me placing more rubber mounts also.

Hi,
apologies if this seems like a stupid question.
But is it legal to not have a rear vision mirror if it is fitted as standard equipment on a vehicle?

Given the stupidity (IMHO) of the WA law prohibiting having anything dangling from the rear vision mirror,
is it possible that whether it is legal or not might depend on which State you are driving in?

cheers
Mike

Bit hard to have one in a Pantec trck, ute with solid canopy, etc.
My next car will be a dual cab ute with a solid canopy, so no need for a mirror which blocks my field of view.

Hi @DaveR,
I understand that. Just thinking about when that is not the case, when a mirror is fitted AND it is possible to use it.

cheers

You never know with the law, mirror on my ute isn't much chop as I have a alloy shed on the back, the screen that I replaced the mirror with doesn't hinder much as the windscreen has a black section and some sort of unit stuck on behind the mirror, I have the same view now as I had with a mirror, I did find when I mounted the screen on the dash that the sunlight played havoc on the screen at times and to cut down the reflection from the rear window I put that black rubber cupboard liner over it, stopped the heat as well...................1tb should be enough I reckon.

I have been in contact with Safety Dave, most helpful for sure, but didn't have what I was looking to do.

There are specialist firms who sell these units, fit, maintain them etc. They have real flash ones too with a sim card, back to base live tracking, even live listening to the driver..... how nice would that be?
But the $$$$ is a bit much for me. Typical start price is $950 plus mounting gear and HDD.

I have a system from http://www.brashimports.com.au/ which includes the inputs from a couple of cameras as well as the dash camera.

Mine only records the dash cam, but they may have something that records more than 1 at a time.

Ive been very happy with my system, and have found David Brash, the owner very responsive.

Thanks for that mate, I did find the Brash Import site when looking, but am guilty of passing it over without much of a look.
I see that they do import the DVR that I am investigating, so it looks that I'll be making a call soon. I'd much rather deal with a human here in Aus then buy something from evilbay OS, not done the evilbay thing yet, recon I'll be the last to do so.
This page on the site has the DVR, 1 of the few I have been trying to look into.
