Hi All.

Planning another (awesome!) family road trip this June/July (16 days max) from Brisbane to Flinders Ranges. (Yes - a long way but we've tackled similar distances before and loved it).

Staying in caravan parks and looking for any suggestions for things/places to see or do along the way.

Usual plan is to stick to about 300-400km each time we move +/-.

Current rough plan is:
Brisbane
Goondiwindi (Not too far from Brisbane but gets us in the zone)
Gilgandra?
Cobar?
Broken Hill (Stay 2-3 days)
Flinders Ranges (Wilpena Pound Stay 3-4 days)
Mildura (Stay 2-3 days)
Griffith?
Dubbo
?? (Drop by the Qld meet up perhaps at Storm King Dam)
Brisbane

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

Hi @twscoot when we go we stay at the big 4 at Gooindiwindi then at a free camp 60K west of Cobar, next stop would be Peterborough but the inlaws are only an hour or so past there. Pity you're not coming in September for the meet (or are you?)

Also Balranald ....again, interesting and caravan park is highly recommended

Not sure what your plan for accomodation at the pound is but we stayed at http://www.wilpenapound.com.au/ when we went in 2013. Wasn't all that impressed on a value for money basis. Next time we go that way will try http://www.rawnsleypark.com.au/ which we have heard good things about. The Redruth Gaol is worth a quick look at as you drive through Burra on the way to Mildura. Looks like a great trip.

We stayed at Wilpenapound and took a drive to Rawnsleypark whilst there. Rawnsleypark is a bit further away from the Pound and is on sloping ground. Wilpenapound Resort is certainly more refined but still has large pitches with plenty space. You can walk easily into the pound from the campsite and both have a restaurant onsite although check opening day's first. Fuel is available at Wilpenapound and the cost wasn't too bad.
After seeing both, we still preferred Wilpena pound, but check out Wikicamps for others reviews.
Check out Blinman Mine about an hour away for a great community run experience into an old copper mine. Also don't miss the Prairie Hotel for their Feral Foods menu. http://www.prairiehotel.com.au/restaurant

In Broken Hill avoid the top tourist park, right on the main highway with trucks running past all night.

Wilpena to Mildura is a big day with plenty to see along the way.

Wadlata in Port Augusta is worth a visit, allow 3-4 hours for it.

Two places I'd now recommend but depends on your style of camping. Both would be on your route.

Nyngan....the cheap one. Nyngan van and leisure park. $20 powered per night and lovely clean amenities. Very quiet, apart from some non intrusive goats next door. No frills just really good value.

Yunta free camp. In town, opposite pub and really good value for the price....donation only. Need to be self sufficient.

We're doing that route now so will add anything more of interest.

Where are you?

We're floundering around the area north of Adelaide so we can avoid the long weekend bun rush. Weather has suddenly turned cold (for us, at least) so might have to contemplate a diesel heater if we venture south again. In the meantime, I'll suffer till Crusty decides to lend us his heater. He won't need it in the north.

I run Adelaide to Broken Hill twice a week. Just got home plenty of traffic out today

Might be better suited to a summer visit but Lemon tree flat is a great spot for a wind down. The Ashford caves are a real hit with active kids. With only 16 days you may not have time for the detour but it is a good place to keep in mind. I did a trip report here

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
It's going to be tight but here's the now planned route for June/July.
17 nights and just over 4000km.
A couple of 'double visits' we may bypass depending on how things are going.
Can't wait.

Yes thanks @crackacoldie. The bits in between the three main destinations are pretty much up for grabs. At this stage I'm not planning on pre-booking anything that time of year. With the kids now a bit older we are equipped to change plans if we feel.
Does anyone think we should be booking into Broken Hill or Wilpena?

Should be right at Broken Hill, just avoid the Top Tourist Park there, it's on the main drag and you will have trucks (me included) running past all night

FYI... on the advice of Wilpena I've booked four nights for our trip there in June/July. There's not too many powered sites and being school holidays they suggested a booking would be worthwhile. Think perhaps I'll book Broken Hill as well..
