I am making the big assumption that if my van is registered in Vic, I do not need the breakaway monitor, even when travelling in other states that mandate it?

Just NSW from memory go figure!!!!

Hi relgate, I also had no idea of this unit being required. Did you get your rego done without this?

Cheers.

They don't check it at first rego as caravan is registered by the dealer so most people escape it at this point.

I would have thought from a dealer stand point they should insist in NSW it is fitted to ensure the vehicle complies with standards but its not done that way.

Either way its good piece of mind to know wether your breakaway controllers battery is working correctly or not given the amount of weight some of the vans have!

No body checked. As you know I blue slipped it and then registered in NSW, and it was never mentioned.

I have a feeling that it will never get checked but better to be safe than sorry. Plus, it adds another gizmo to the dash!

All this discussion and I am wondering where the breakaway controller (6000) is charged from.

I could not see where it is connected to the Setec.

Is it drawing power/charging from the "reversing light" pin that Jayco use as a hot pin?

Cheers,

Ro

I was wondering the same.

relgate,

I have read in another post (can't find it now) that Jayco used to wire the break away to the Setec - they may still do! This assumes that you have access to 240v on a fairly regular basis to recharge the battery in the break away unit. What happens if you are doing remote camping and only using solar to recharge?

I would have thought that connection to the van's 12v battery (with a diode to stops discharge/drawing on the smaller battery) or the plug to the car would make more sense.

Cheers,

Rohan

OK, so had a look on the rv electronics web page.
Looks like it is wired directly to the trailer plug. I reality I suspect it is actually joined to the hot wire in the 'junction box' under the van (mine is in front of the driverside wheel)
The earth looks like it uses the brake earth

Hmmm,

Like you relgate - looks like a shimmy under the van with a screwdriver, torch and multimeter.

Here is hoping I don't have to remove the reversing signal connector and connect the hot wire to pin 2. Was planning on leaving the reverse signal connected and putting some reversing LEDs on the rear of the van to provide some extra light for the reversing camera.

We had the batteries connected to the Anderson plug and the 12v for fridge on the standard pin 9/10, so I thought that the break away would also be connected to the Anderson Plug.

Questions answered...

Found the Brakesafe Wiring Instructions on R. V. Electronics' web site. Looks like the correct means to charge the unit's battery is via the cars 12v aux point via pin 2 (usually reversing signal).

This kills an excuse to crawl under the van - bugger!

I'll have to take a look at mine. On pickup, we were told specifically it would only charge when connected to 240v, or the battery if we were to install one later
