My 2 cents, on the other forum (the less than friendly one) there is a copper who loaded some pictures of vans being checked, apparently in a few different locations on the east coast mainly in Victoria. Then the usual key board heros came out blaming the manufacturers etc, and questioning the revenue, the copper said look it works because its in magazines and all over the forums now, you have all been told :)

Sydney. Northern Beaches.
Custom tow hitch by the look of things.
I know the standard cast tow hitch receivers on the Prado are not engineered to take random hitches. They recommend the use of a genuine parts only.
Looking at that hitch, it appears that the cast tow hitch receiver has fractured in half. You can see what I think are the remnants still bolted to the SHS.

Poor bloke.......hope all are well and that insurance covers the damage.

I'm trying to work out what they've stacked on the rear bar....anyone identified it?

It looks like more than bike racks.

(I'm looking on iPad and having trouble zooming in and getting it the right way round)

That would certainly spoil a holiday.....and everything else, including the hip pocket.
The folded item on the back of the caravan looks like a folding boat trailer for inflatable boats. I saw one last Christmas while we were away. I helped the guy next to us when he was loading it into the back of his 4wd. Felt heavy.
Cheers

Have a look on the Facebook page of claytons towing. They have a few pictures of the roll over as well as some videos of the recovery.

Sobering pics of what can happen and a good reminder to my wife and myself to be on the ball when we are driving on our trip up north next month. I have a new Kokoda Tribute 11 which has 2 spare wheels and two batteries and is 2.4 tons empty and 2.9 tons loaded so I would think the van in the accident would be close to that so there isn't much room to be legal for the Prado's 2.5 ton limit. That was one of the main reasons we bought a Jeep instead of a Prado because of the 3.5 tons tow capacity, I am not a Prado hater as I do like them but happy with the Jeep. We will not be towing anywhere near that weight because quite frankly I would be worried all the time that the tail is going to wag the dog and as I have a fridge module in the back of the car I need to be careful to stay inside the weight limits.

Loading to maximum towing capacity is a bit of a fallacy really.
Kerb Weight GVM GCM Max Trailer
Landcruiser 200
2740 3350 6850 3500
Prado 2220 2900 5290 2500
Ranger 2271 3200 6000 3500
Jeep Overland 2329 2915 6449 3500
Isuzu D-Max 1940 2950 5950 3500

...Less than 100kg between most kerb weights (apart from the 200series) and the poor Prado has 1000kg less towing capacity.

Get a bit of sway going and which vehicle would I prefer to be in?

The one with sway control on the van of course...

There's a lot more to weights than maximum towing capacity, as we know.

The payload on that Prado would have been totally exceeded by just one driver, the boat and the boat loader on the back, not to mention all the other stuff.

And, I agree, sway controllers are great but they won't solve what seems to be a major overloading issue.

I'm glad they seem to be ok.

Dean, how are you going with your struggle with weights?

(As outlined at the beginning of this thread)

Still waiting on Jayco to come back with a yes or no to increasing the GVM.... Considering the chassis is the same section as much heavier vans to me it's not a hard decision. Go from 6 leaf to 7 leaf and give me another 250kg (the axle load is still 100kg below max rated and the tyres are within spec).

Will see what they come back with. You'd think they would have already done the same mod to the same van at some time considering they're so popular.
